GM’s Q1 2019 Pickup Sales Gain: What the 20% Figure Really Meant

GM’s 20% Q1 2019 gain applied to combined Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 crew-cab sales—not to the company’s total U.S. vehicle deliveries, which fell 7%.

GM’s widely cited first-quarter gain was not a 20% jump in all company sales. In Q1 2019, GM reported 665,840 U.S. vehicle deliveries, down 7% from a year earlier, while combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 crew-cab pickups rose 20%. The distinction matters: one figure covers two truck configurations; the other covers GM’s overall U.S. business. GM’s April 2, 2019 release is the primary source for the announcement.

What GM’s Q1 2019 sales figures show

The phrase “sales gain” refers to a narrow but notable result inside a weaker overall quarter. GM said its U.S. deliveries fell year over year, even as the crew-cab versions of its newly redesigned full-size pickups gained sales.

Measure Q1 2019 result Scope
GM U.S. vehicle deliveries 665,840, down 7% year over year All GM vehicles reported in the release
Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 crew-cab sales Up 20% year over year Combined sales of the two crew-cab configurations
GM sales mix More than 80% Trucks, SUVs and crossovers, as reported by GM
Average transaction price $35,881 Q1 2019 estimate attributed by GM to J.D. Power PIN

The transaction-price figure is GM’s report of a J.D. Power PIN estimate, not an independently verified figure in the reviewed sources. GM also said the all-new light-duty pickups’ average transaction price was $8,040 above that of their outgoing models in Q1 2018, again citing J.D. Power PIN estimates.

Which pickups drove the gain—and why the configuration matters

The 20% increase applied to the combined Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 crew cabs, not to every Silverado or Sierra body style and not to GM’s full truck lineup. GM said production mix for the new pickups was weighted toward crew cabs, at more than 70%, while availability of regular- and double-cab pickups was very limited during the quarter because of launch timing.

GM also reported that more than 95% of all-new Sierra 1500 crew-cab sales were high-end trims. Then-U.S. vice president of Sales Operations Kurt McNeil said, “Our production launch was very smooth and crew cab sales are brisk, especially those with premium trims.” These are company-reported mix and launch details; they help explain the configuration result but do not establish that every pickup type grew.

What the result does—and does not—say about the market

GM said trucks, SUVs and crossovers accounted for more than 80% of its sales mix in the quarter. That helps put the pickup result in context, but the announcement does not establish that the 20% crew-cab increase was the industry’s best overall sales gain. Such a ranking would require comparable data across automakers and a consistent measure—such as total deliveries, retail sales, or a particular vehicle segment.

The release also described retail SAAR as rising each month after a slow January. GM chief economist Elaine Buckberg characterized consumer sentiment and other economic indicators as improving at the time. That is the company economist’s assessment, not independent proof that those factors caused buyers to purchase vehicles.

How to read the claim alongside later quarters

The 2019 result is historical and should not be treated as a description of GM’s current performance. GM’s subsequent U.S. quarterly reports used different years and comparison periods:

For another source of context on the 2025 comparison, the Associated Press reported that analysts saw the possibility some March purchases had shifted earlier ahead of tariff changes. That timing discussion concerns 2025, not the causes of GM’s Q1 2019 result. Associated Press, April 1, 2025.

What to check when comparing automakers’ sales claims

  • Geography and period: Confirm that figures cover the same market and quarter.
  • Unit count versus growth rate: A percentage increase does not reveal how many vehicles were sold without the underlying total.
  • Company totals versus model results: GM’s overall deliveries and the combined crew-cab result measure different things.
  • Retail versus fleet: These are distinct channels and should not be treated as interchangeable.
  • Transaction price versus volume: A higher reported transaction price is not itself evidence of more vehicles sold.
