You may claim GST input tax credit (ITC) on an eligible purchase made through an e-commerce platform if you are GST-registered, use or intend to use the purchase for business, hold the required tax document, and meet the other legal conditions. Buying through a marketplace does not by itself make a purchase eligible—or ineligible. Check the supplier’s invoice and its appearance in GSTR-2B, assess restrictions, then claim eligible credit in GSTR-3B.
This guide covers Indian GST rules in general. Eligibility for a particular transaction depends on facts such as the item, business use, registration, invoice, and applicable restrictions.
Who can claim ITC on an online purchase?
Section 16 of the CGST Act frames ITC entitlement around a registered person acquiring goods or services for use, or intended use, in the course or furtherance of business. The online sales channel does not change that test. A personal purchase does not become business ITC merely because it was ordered through a marketplace or paid for using a business account.
Before proceeding, check that the GST-registered recipient is the business claiming the credit and that the purchase has a genuine business purpose. Also consider whether the credit is restricted—for example, because it relates to personal use, exempt supplies, blocked credit, or a place-of-supply issue. GSTR-2B does not identify every possible legal restriction, so its entries are not a final eligibility decision.

What document do you need?
Obtain the supplier-issued tax invoice or another document prescribed under GST rules. An order confirmation, payment receipt, or marketplace summary may support your commercial records, but it is not necessarily the tax document required to claim ITC.
Check the invoice against the transaction: the supplier and recipient details, invoice particulars, taxable value, and GST charged should be accurate. If the invoice is addressed to the wrong entity or contains an error, ask the supplier to correct it rather than relying on the order page.

How to claim the credit
- Confirm registration and business use. Verify that the intended claimant is GST-registered and that the goods or services are used or intended for business. Do not treat personal-use purchases as ordinary business ITC.
- Download and check the supplier’s tax invoice. Match the parties, invoice details, taxable value, and tax charged to the actual purchase. Keep the order and payment records as supporting commercial documents.
- Review the relevant GSTR-2B. GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted, read-only statement based on details furnished by suppliers. The GST Portal says it should be used to help take the right ITC in the respective sections of GSTR-3B: GST Portal returns guidance. GSTR-2B itself is not filed.
- Self-assess the entry. Check business use and applicable restrictions under the Act and rules. An invoice appearing in GSTR-2B does not override an otherwise applicable restriction.
- Report eligible credit in GSTR-3B. Include the eligible amount in the appropriate section for the transaction type and tax period, following current portal instructions and your filing method.
- Retain records and track supplier payment. Keep the invoice, relevant order or receipt details, evidence of business use where useful, and reconciliation notes. Monitor payment to the supplier because the 180-day rule may require a reversal.
How GSTR-2B affects an e-commerce purchase
Use GSTR-2B to reconcile the supplier’s reported invoice details with your records. The statement is intended to guide ITC reporting, but it is not an all-purpose approval of the claim: taxpayers must assess legal eligibility separately.
If the invoice is missing or incorrect, verify the supplier GSTIN, invoice particulars, and relevant tax period. Then contact the supplier to resolve the missing filing or correction. Do not assume that an online order or a receipt showing GST is enough to establish the required document and reporting details.

GSTR-2B flags such as “not available” apply to particular scenarios; they do not necessarily capture every reason credit could be legally unavailable. Resolve mismatches and assess the underlying conditions before taking the credit.
Marketplace TCS is not the buyer’s ITC
Marketplace tax collection and a buyer’s inward-purchase ITC are separate issues. Under the ordinary section 52 mechanism, an e-commerce operator may collect tax at source on qualifying supplies where it collects the consideration. That TCS is reflected for the actual registered supplier and may be used against that supplier’s output tax liability; it is not an additional credit for the marketplace customer. See the CBIC e-commerce FAQ.

For notified services covered by section 9(5), the operator may be responsible for paying GST. That changes tax payment and outward-supply reporting; it does not independently establish the customer’s entitlement to ITC. The buyer must still meet the conditions that apply to the buyer’s own purchase. GST Portal instructions distinguish supplier-reported marketplace sales subject to section 52 from operator-reported section 9(5) supplies in its returns guidance.

CBIC’s rules guidance describes a reversal when a recipient who has claimed ITC does not pay the supplier the value of the supply and tax within 180 days. The stated consequences include adding the credit back to output tax liability, with interest, and allow re-availment after payment. Check the current rule and any applicable exceptions for your transaction; see CBIC’s Central GST Rules.

When to get transaction-specific advice
Ask a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant to review a claim if the invoice is disputed, the purchase has mixed business and personal use, the place of supply is unclear, or the credit may fall under a restriction. The applicable result depends on transaction and registration facts, not simply on which platform processed the order.
