The company traces its origins to circuit-board work near Detroit, says a General Motors contract helped it expand in 1979, and now describes capabilities across automotive electronics. Its 2023 sale of two mobility sites to BYD Electronic changed part of the business, but does not establish that Jabil left automotive work altogether.
Jabil’s automotive roots began with circuit-board manufacturing
Jabil says James Golden and William Morean formed a 50-50 partnership in 1966 and built circuit boards in the Morean home outside Detroit for Control Data Corporation. The company’s history then marks a significant automotive step in 1979, when General Motors awarded Jabil a high-volume printed circuit board manufacturing contract valued at $15 million. From vehicle electronics to electrification and computing
Jabil dates its entry into the electric vehicle market to 2012. It describes work involving EV powertrains, charging components, and related offerings for major brands. Its current automotive materials span several areas of vehicle technology:
- ADAS: advanced driver-assistance systems and related electronics.
- Connectivity: technologies that support connected vehicles.
- Power and charging: vehicle power systems and charging components.
- Vehicle compute: computing technologies used in vehicles.
Jabil also says its global IATF-certified facilities support automotive electronics manufacturing. These are company descriptions of its capabilities, not independently quantified measures of automotive sales or market share. What the 2023 mobility divestiture changed
Jabil says it divested its mobility business to BYD Electronic in 2023, transferring its Chengdu and Wuxi sites. That transaction is an important part of the story, but it should not be read as proof that Jabil exited all automotive work. The company continues to describe automotive electronics capabilities; the available information does not quantify how the divestiture changed its automotive revenue or the size of its remaining automotive business. In results released September 30, 2026, Jabil CEO Mike Dastoor included automotive among the areas of “solid growth” in the company’s fiscal 2027 outlook. His statement was: “Our fiscal 2027 outlook reflects the strength of Jabil’s diversified portfolio, with accelerating AI demand complemented by solid growth in automotive, healthcare, energy infrastructure, defense and aerospace, and warehouse and retail automation.” Jabil’s FY2026 results release
This is management’s forward-looking characterization, not a separately quantified automotive forecast. The release’s broad outlook language does not establish an automotive-specific growth rate or revenue figure. The clearest supported reading of Jabil’s return to automotive roots is therefore a combination of historical continuity, present-day capability claims, and management’s positive but unquantified outlook—not a disclosed new deal or a standalone automotive financial forecast.
