To fix a mismatch, reconcile the same transactions and tax period across your marketplace reports, invoices and notes, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and—where applicable—the e-commerce operator’s GSTR-8 data. Trace each difference to a source record before changing a return: a settlement payout is not the same thing as taxable sales, and a portal total alone does not establish that a sale is missing.
Start by comparing like with like
Gather the records for the period in question, including completed, cancelled and returned orders. Compare them at transaction level before relying on aggregate totals.
- Marketplace order and transaction reports: include order status and relevant dates.
- Source documents and books: invoices, debit notes, credit notes and the seller’s accounting records.
- Settlement and fee reports: separate gross sale value, refunds or returns, marketplace charges, tax on charges and net remittance.
- GST records: GSTR-1 records and summary, and GSTR-3B outward tax liability for the same period.
- Operator-reported data: GSTR-8 or portal-reported supply details, where applicable to the seller and period.
Build a transaction-level match using a stable order or invoice reference, invoice date, customer GSTIN or status where relevant, destination and place of supply, taxable value, rate and tax amount. Keep separate fields for transaction date, reporting period, return or credit-note date, and settlement date. These dates can fall in different periods; collapsing them into one date can make a timing difference look like a missing or duplicate sale.
For supplies through an e-commerce operator, the cited CGST Rules compilation describes matching the operator’s GSTR-8 details against supplier GSTR-1 by place of supply and net taxable value. CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs say returned supplies reduce the net value of taxable supplies for the operator’s TCS calculation. Those checks make returns, credit notes, state classification and period cut-offs especially important.

Check the common causes in order
1. Timing and cut-off
Compare the supply or invoice period with the marketplace report period, GST return period and settlement date. A payout received later does not by itself mean the sale belongs in a later tax period.
2. Cancellations, refunds and returns
Check whether cancelled orders were treated as completed sales and whether returned goods are reflected in the relevant records. Do not assume a marketplace refund total and GST credit-note reporting will be identical; match each refund or return to its supporting documents and applicable reporting treatment.
3. Credit and debit notes
Match each note’s number, date, value and tax treatment to the original transaction where relevant. Establish which period the note belongs in and whether it was included in the return for that period.

4. Missing or duplicate transactions
Compare order IDs and invoice numbers across source exports and books. Look for duplicate imports, missed orders, cancelled invoices that remain in a sales total, and manual journal entries that have no corresponding source document.
5. Classification and place of supply
Verify customer registration status, supply category, applicable rate and whether the transaction is taxable, exempt or treated differently. Check the destination and place-of-supply fields against the return classification. A marketplace label alone does not establish the correct GST treatment; classification depends on the facts.
6. Gross sales versus net payout
Do not reduce reported sales simply because the cash settlement is lower. Reconcile the sale, refunds, marketplace fees, tax on fees and payout separately. The correct tax treatment of a charge depends on its documentation and the transaction facts.

7. Operator reporting
Inspect GSTR-8 or the relevant portal-reported information available to you, and compare it with your own transactions. GSTN’s portal functionality compilation for April 2023 to March 2024 describes a view of supplies reported by e-commerce operators, including amendments, for the relevant unregistered-supplier functionality. Verify which portal view applies to your registration and period.
Choose a correction route based on filing status
First establish which forms have been filed and whether the discrepancy is in the underlying sales statement, tax-liability return or operator reporting. Do not add a duplicate sale just to make a portal total agree; trace the difference to an invoice, note or other source record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGSTR-1 filed, but GSTR-3B for the period not filed
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 guide describes optional GSTR-1A as a same-period facility to add missed records or amend GSTR-1 records before filing that period’s GSTR-3B; the changes are auto-populated to GSTR-3B. Confirm current portal workflow and eligibility for your taxpayer type and period before using it.

An earlier GSTR-1 needs correction
The GST Portal guide describes amendment tables and functionality that can depend on the filing period. CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs say mistakes may be corrected in subsequent returns through an amendment table, and state a cutoff tied to the return for September following the financial year or filing of the annual return, whichever is earlier. Because provisions can change, check the current statutory cutoff and portal facility for the relevant financial year rather than relying on the FAQ alone.
GSTR-3B liability differs
Reconcile corrected outward-supply figures and tax liability before deciding whether a later return, payment, amendment or other action is required. There is no single correction route established for every GSTR-3B situation. If tax may have been short-paid, a notice has arrived, or the relevant periods are closed, ask a qualified Indian GST professional to review the actual returns and records.
GSTR-8 differs from seller GSTR-1
Compare at least place of supply and net taxable value, then determine whether the supplier’s or operator’s reported information needs correction. The CBIC-hosted CGST Rules compilation dated 23 April 2019 describes discrepancy communication and correction by either party, with possible liability consequences if the discrepancy is not corrected. Verify subsequent amendments and current portal practice before relying on those procedural details.

You received DRC-01C
GSTN’s functionality compilation describes DRC-01C for a specific difference between ITC available in GSTR-2B and ITC claimed in GSTR-3B. It is not a general notice for marketplace outward-sales mismatches. Read the intimation and follow the stated portal process; keep this ITC issue separate from sales reconciliation.

Use one row per invoice, order, credit note or debit note. A practical working sheet includes:
- Marketplace and order, invoice or note reference.
- Document date, supply period and settlement date.
- Customer GSTIN or status where applicable.
- Delivery state and place of supply.
- Gross value, taxable value, rate, tax components and document total.
- Refund, return or cancellation status and supporting evidence.
- Marketplace fee and tax on fee, recorded separately.
- GSTR-1 table or record and GSTR-3B period or category.
- GSTR-8 operator value where applicable.
- Variance, reason, proposed correction, reviewer and filing reference.
Retain raw marketplace exports, filed-return acknowledgments, portal summaries, invoices, notes and operator statements. Add a dated explanation for each adjustment. If a platform changes report formats, preserve the export definitions or field mapping used so the reconciliation can be reproduced.
When a professional review is warranted
Ask a qualified Indian GST professional to review the records before changing a filed position if the mismatch involves a notice, possible short payment, uncertain tax classification, closed periods or material amounts. The correct action depends on the actual transactions, filing status and rules applicable to the period; a marketplace total or general correction deadline cannot settle those facts on its own.
