Protect your my Social Security account by entering through SSA’s official account page, signing in with Login.gov or ID.me, and enabling a supported multifactor authentication (MFA) method. Treat unexpected calls, texts, emails, and messages demanding personal information or money as suspicious. If your identity or records may already be affected, use the right reporting channel: the FTC for identity theft, SSA’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for suspected program fraud, and SSA for correcting earnings records.
Secure your account through SSA’s official sign-in route
Start at ssa.gov/myaccount rather than a link in an unexpected message. SSA currently uses Login.gov and ID.me for my Social Security sign-in and identity verification. SSA says its legacy username sign-in ended June 7, 2025. If you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, use the provider you have; you do not need to choose a provider based on a claim that one is inherently more secure.
- Open SSA’s account creation page by typing the SSA address yourself or using a saved bookmark.
- Select the sign-in provider offered by SSA. Sign in to that provider or complete its identity-verification process, then continue to my Social Security. SSA’s account creation guidance describes Login.gov as suited to most U.S. users and ID.me as an option for people inside or outside the United States; confirm the current instructions on the page if you live abroad. SSA account creation guidance
- Use a strong, unique password for the sign-in provider. Do not reuse a password exposed in a breach or share your sign-in or email account with another person.
- Turn on MFA and choose a method you can reliably access. The available methods depend on the provider; check its current support instructions before selecting a method or buying a device.
SSA says account creation requires that you be at least 18 and have a valid email address. It also says each customer needs a unique email address. SSA account FAQs and help
Choose an MFA method you can keep using
MFA adds a second verification step beyond your password. A lost or changed phone can interrupt access, but a mobile number is not the only option: SSA lists security keys, landlines, and backup codes among alternatives. Whether a particular method works depends on the sign-in provider. Check Login.gov’s or ID.me’s official help before relying on a method, and store backup codes somewhere secure and separate from your phone. Keep recovery contact information current. For accounts created on or after September 18, 2021, SSA says users generally need to contact their sign-in provider to update contact information. The provider can also help with password changes, authentication methods, and identity-proofing problems. SSA can help with electronic access issues such as blocking or unblocking access or deactivating an account, and it offers phone identity verification for most users. Use the published provider or SSA help route if you are locked out, not a stranger who offers to fix the account. SSA account creation and help FAQ

Recognize impersonation and payment scams
Scammers may pose as SSA or another familiar organization, invent an urgent problem or prize, pressure you to act, and insist on a particular payment method. Red flags include threats of arrest, legal action, benefit suspension, or seizure of funds; instructions to move money to a supposedly protected account; and demands for secrecy or immediate payment.
- Do not pay someone claiming you must resolve an SSA problem with gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, precious metals, prepaid debit cards, or mailed cash.
- Do not trust caller ID by itself. It can be spoofed, and a scammer may use a real employee’s name or official-looking images.
- Do not click suspicious links or attachments. SSA says it will not ask for sensitive personal information through social media, email, or text message.
- Pause and contact SSA independently through its official website if a communication worries you. Report Social Security-related scams to SSA OIG.
SSA reported on March 12, 2025, that approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change direct-deposit bank information. In that release, SSA said bank information changes required either two-factor authentication through my Social Security or in-person identity verification. This is a dated agency statement, not a measure of all Social Security fraud; check SSA’s current procedures before making a change. Respond quickly if your information or money was exposed
If you shared a password or suspect account access
- Go directly to your sign-in provider’s official site and change the exposed password. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and review available authentication and contact settings.
- If you cannot get in, contact Login.gov or ID.me through its official help channel. Contact SSA through its published channels if the issue is electronic access to my Social Security.
- Secure the email account tied to the sign-in as well, because access to that inbox can undermine account recovery.
If someone stole personal information or used your identity
SSA says identity-theft issues are handled by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), not SSA. Report the misuse at IdentityTheft.gov to get a recovery plan. SSA also recommends contacting Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion about placing a fraud alert on your credit reports. A fraud alert can affect online identity proofing: SSA says you can ask the identity-services provider about removing it or arrange an appointment at a local Social Security office; it also says ID.me can be used without removing the alert. Check the provider’s current instructions before changing an alert. SSA guidance for identity-theft victims · SSA FAQ on account creation with a credit-report fraud alert
If a scammer took money
End contact and block the person, report the crime to local police, and follow the FTC’s scam-recovery guidance. Do not pay an additional “recovery” service that promises to get the money back; verify any help independently.

Use a fraud alert without accidentally blocking identity proofing
A credit-file fraud alert may complicate identity verification when creating or accessing an account. SSA’s guidance describes asking the identity-services provider about removing the alert or arranging an appointment at a local office, and notes that ID.me can be used without removing the alert. Because provider procedures can change, check current instructions before altering your credit-file alert. SSA’s fraud-alert and account-creation FAQ
