A temporary hold on one payment method or address is not necessarily a full-account freeze. Start with the restriction notice inside your account, secure the account, and follow the exchange’s official review process; there is no universal workaround, and buying a wallet will not lift an exchange restriction.
First identify what the restriction actually blocks
Sign in through the exchange’s official website or app and read the notice shown in your account. Do not rely on an unexpected email, text, or direct message as proof of what is happening. Check whether the block applies to crypto sends, fiat withdrawals, deposits, trading, a particular asset, or a particular destination address. Some exchanges restrict one function while leaving others available.
For example, Coinbase describes restrictions that can affect buying or selling, sending crypto, cashing out, or closing an account. Kraken lists possible restriction triggers including security concerns, suspected malicious activity, withdrawals to prohibited or scam-associated wallets, and chargebacks. These are provider-specific examples, not rules that apply to every exchange.

The time periods in this table are provider-specific published examples, not promises that your withdrawal will be available when a particular number of hours or days passes. Check the current notice and policy for your exchange, account, location, and funding method.

Secure the account and complete legitimate requests
If you suspect someone else may have accessed the account, change your password through the official site, review two-factor authentication, and use any account-freeze or security-support option reached from that site. Respond to identity or source-of-funds requests only after signing in through a verified official channel.
- Never share your password, one-time verification codes, recovery phrase, or private keys with support staff or anyone claiming to help.
- Do not install remote-access software or let someone control your device to “fix” a withdrawal. Kraken Support says it will not ask for login credentials or remote access.
- Keep copies of the restriction notice, support messages, ticket number, relevant dates, and transaction records.
Coinbase says its restriction-recovery steps require account access and 2-step verification. If a restriction prevents you from completing a request, ask official support what authorized next step is available rather than sending documents or credentials through a contact you cannot independently verify.

Ask support specific questions
Reach support from the exchange’s official app or website, not from a phone number or link sent by an unsolicited contact. Give the case number if you have one and ask questions that distinguish an account review from a narrower hold:
- What kind of restriction is active, and which actions are blocked?
- Does it affect crypto withdrawals, fiat cash-outs, deposits, trading, a specific asset, or only a particular address or payment method?
- Is there a verification, security, or documentation step I still need to complete in my account?
- If this is a hold, what event started it, and is there a stated end time or status page?
- Can any crypto or fiat withdrawal still be made, and what official steps are required?
Do not send repeated transfers to different addresses to test the restriction. An unsuccessful attempt does not establish that another route is authorized, and repeated attempts may complicate an account review.

Use an allowed withdrawal carefully
If the exchange confirms that an external crypto withdrawal is available, verify the transfer details before approving it. A mistaken transfer can be difficult or impossible to recover.
- Confirm the asset and network. Check that the receiving wallet or service supports the exact asset on the exact blockchain network selected in the exchange. Similar asset names do not guarantee network compatibility.
- Use a destination you control or independently trust. Copy the address from the receiving wallet or service, then compare the full address on the exchange confirmation screen with the intended destination. Do not rely only on a familiar beginning or ending.
- Check any memo or tag. Some destinations require an additional identifier. Follow the receiving service’s instructions and confirm whether the exchange requires the same information.
- Review the exchange’s displayed fee and minimum. Confirm the amount that will arrive after fees and any limit shown before submitting.
- Consider a small test only if it is practical. Account for the fee, minimum, timing, and any platform limits before deciding whether a test transfer is worthwhile.
- Confirm the details before signing. Kraken Support warns: “Crypto transactions are final: Withdrawn funds cannot be reversed or recovered.” After a transfer is broadcast and confirmed, the exchange generally cannot retrieve it.
A hardware wallet is one optional destination for self-custody if an external withdrawal is permitted and you want to manage the assets yourself. It does not override an exchange restriction, and an existing suitable wallet may be enough.

Avoid recovery scams and false shortcuts
Do not send crypto to a person or service that promises to unlock, validate, or recover funds held by an exchange. Do not disclose a wallet seed phrase, private key, password, or verification code. An exchange restriction is controlled by the exchange or, in some cases, a legal order—not by a new wallet or a stranger’s “recovery” procedure.
If the case remains unresolved
Save the exchange’s notices and your communications, and identify the legal entity operating your exchange and the country or state relevant to your account. Complaint channels, consumer protections, and legal options depend on those facts; contacting a regulator does not guarantee that funds will be released.

If the notice refers to a court order, sanctions, or another legal requirement, ask the exchange through official support what information it can provide about the restriction and the applicable process. The exchange may be legally unable to release the assets while the order or restriction remains in force. Do not treat a general online complaint route as a substitute for jurisdiction-specific advice.
