The documented ties between National Instruments (NI) founders James Truchard and Jeff Kodosky were professional: they were colleagues, combined different technical strengths, and worked closely over years on LabVIEW. The available accounts do not establish whether they were personal friends.

How Truchard and Kodosky came to work together

Before founding NI, Truchard, Kodosky, and Bill Nowlin worked at the University of Texas at Austin’s Applied Research Laboratories. A 2004 retrospective in Physics Today says Truchard suggested starting a company; the three acted on the idea in February 1976 and incorporated in May. NI’s 2011 proxy statement also identifies Kodosky as a co-founder in 1976.

The chronology establishes a shared workplace and a business decision, not the details of how Truchard and Kodosky first met or the nature of their relationship outside work.

Different technical strengths shaped their collaboration

In a 2013 interview, Truchard described his own background as primarily analog design and Kodosky’s as software programming. He said the two worked closely to create LabVIEW, a software environment for measurement and automation, and that the effort took two years. That account offers the clearest explanation of what each brought to the partnership: complementary expertise joined in a sustained development effort.

  • DURABLE STEEL CONSTRUCTION: Heavy-duty steel frame withstands repeated use and weight loads while maintaining consistent performance, ensuring long-lasting operation for residential and commercial applications.

The partnership continued beyond LabVIEW’s creation

NI’s 2011 proxy statement records Kodosky’s long technical career at the company: vice president from 1978, head of research and development from 1980 to 2000, and Business and Technology Fellow from 2000 onward, as described in that filing. The proxy also presents NI’s view that he remained a mentor and contributor to LabVIEW’s direction; that is the company’s rationale, not an independent assessment.

Public appearances also show the pair continuing to discuss their work together. NI’s 2006 announcement records Truchard and Kodosky reflecting on LabVIEW’s first 20 years at NIWeek, and an NI conference publication records them appearing together to discuss LabVIEW techniques in 2003.

What the record says—and does not say—about their bond

The evidence supports a durable working relationship built around shared company-building and technical work. It does not establish a personal friendship, family connection, or private bond. Calling their ties personal would go beyond what these accounts document.

The scale NI had reached by 2004 gives historical context to the company they helped build: Physics Today reported more than $425 million in annual sales, more than 3,100 employees, and about 1,500 hardware and software products. Those are figures reported in 2004, not current company statistics.
