How to Lower Electricity Costs When You Electrify Your Home

Cut electrification costs by reducing heating and cooling loads, comparing efficient equipment with what it replaces, and checking whether local rates or rebates improve the numbers.

You can keep electrification from driving up your electric bill by first cutting the home’s heating and cooling needs, then choosing efficient equipment and using lower-cost electricity when your utility’s rates or programs make that worthwhile. The right first move depends on what your home uses now, your local energy prices and the condition of the building—not simply on which appliance is newest.

Start with the bill and the biggest loads

Before replacing equipment, review your utility bills, usage history, current tariff and heating fuel. Separate energy use from cost: an appliance can consume less energy yet cost more to run if it replaces a cheaper fuel or operates on a higher electricity rate.

Heating is often a major opportunity. The U.S. Department of Energy says home heating typically uses more energy than any other home system and averages about 30% of a utility bill. That is a national average, not a forecast for an individual household. Your home’s climate, insulation, equipment, occupancy and rates can produce a very different result. DOE: Tax Credits, Rebates, Savings

Reduce the heating and cooling your home needs

Air sealing and insulation reduce the amount of heat a home loses in winter or gains in summer. That can shrink the load a heat pump must serve and limit the electricity needed to keep rooms comfortable. DOE recommends considering envelope improvements as part of preparing a home for electrification. DOE: Maximizing Home Energy Performance When Using Home Energy Rebates

Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.

Priorities depend on the home’s condition. Drafts, uneven temperatures and inadequate insulation may point to worthwhile work, but improvements do not replace proper equipment sizing and installation. A qualified assessment can help identify where heat is escaping and which fixes are relevant before you choose new equipment.

Choose efficient equipment for the system it replaces

Space heating: compare a heat pump with your current system

A modern heat pump can reduce electricity use for heating by approximately 65% compared with electric resistance heating, according to DOE. This comparison is about electricity consumption—not a guaranteed 65% reduction in the bill. Savings and overall costs depend on climate, installation quality, household use, the existing system and local electricity and fuel prices. A switch from gas or another fuel is not the same comparison as replacing electric resistance heat. DOE: Tax Credits, Rebates, Savings

Water heating: consider a heat pump water heater

ENERGY STAR says certified heat pump water heaters use 70% less energy than a standard electric water heater. That is a category-level comparison, not a promise for a particular household. ENERGY STAR’s household savings estimate is not guaranteed, and the economics versus a gas water heater depend on local utility rates. ENERGY STAR: Heat Pump Water Heater Guide

Before choosing one, check household hot-water demand, the available installation space, electrical requirements, installed cost and applicable local incentives. The appliance must suit the home and its hot-water use; an efficiency comparison alone does not establish whether the switch makes financial sense.

Shift flexible use only when the rate makes it pay

Some utilities offer time-of-use rates, demand-response programs or other arrangements that reward shifting electricity use. Some heat pump water heaters offer grid connectivity and can support time-of-use plans or demand response where available. Before relying on that capability, confirm the utility’s actual peak and off-peak hours, the difference between rates, enrollment requirements and equipment compatibility. A schedule change has little value if the tariff offers no meaningful savings or the appliance cannot participate. ENERGY STAR: Heat Pump Water Heater Design Considerations

Check incentives before committing

DOE describes HOMES as a whole-home rebate route and HEAR as an electrification rebate route. ENERGY STAR’s HEAR guidance lists maximum amounts for eligible upgrades, but participating states may narrow the offerings and eligibility. Rules and availability vary, so check your state’s program and utility before buying or signing a contract. DOE: Home Energy Rebates · ENERGY STAR: HEAR Program

Do not count on the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit for a 2026 purchase: ENERGY STAR states that qualifying purchases and installations had to occur by December 31, 2025. State, local and utility incentives have their own rules and may differ. ENERGY STAR: Federal Tax Credits
