For most public-facing business locations, use a clearly displayed QR code as the baseline; add an NFC tag when a tap-first option suits the setting. Both can take a customer to information for the particular site, such as its hours, menu, contact details, or map. Neither method is inherently trustworthy: keep the destination under your control and check signs and tags for tampering.
How QR codes and NFC tags get customers to information
A QR code presents a visible, camera-readable route to a web address. A customer points a phone camera or scanner at it, then follows the link shown on screen. NFC works at close range: a compatible phone is brought near a tag, which can contain an NDEF record with an internet link, point of interest, or address that may open a map or start navigation. NFC Forum’s technology overview describes these tag uses.
Either can lead to a location-specific page. The important distinction is the interaction: QR must be visible and readable, while NFC requires a close tap and a cue that tells customers where to tap.
QR code or NFC tag: practical differences
| Consideration | QR code | NFC tag |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer does | Opens a camera or scanner, aims at the visible code, and follows the presented link. | Brings a compatible NFC phone close to the marked tag; the phone may show a prompt or notification. |
| Placement and range | Can be scanned from a distance if it is large enough, visible, unobstructed, and well lit. | Requires close proximity; the tap area must be easy to locate. |
| Sign design | Must remain visually readable, with suitable size and contrast. | Can be integrated into a sign or object, but needs a clear tap cue. |
| Device needs | A camera and QR-reading support. | Compatible NFC hardware and operating-system behavior. |
| Destination | Can encode a direct URL or a managed redirect. | Can store an NDEF URL or point-of-interest data; tag contents and destination need management. |
| Cost and upkeep | The code is inexpensive to reproduce; signs must stay readable and the URL must remain useful. | Tags are physical items that may require encoding, placement, and replacement; exact costs vary. |
There is no verified independent field comparison establishing which method produces more scans, faster access, fewer failures, or greater customer preference for local-business information. The better choice depends on the placement, audience, and access needs rather than a universal performance ranking.

Choose a format for the location
Use QR as the visible default
A QR code is a practical choice at an entrance, counter, menu board, or other spot where customers can see and aim a camera at a sign. It can be scanned without knowing where a hidden tag is located. Make the code large enough for the expected viewing distance, keep it unobstructed and well lit, and add a short explanation of what it opens.
Add NFC for a tap-first experience
NFC can suit a close-up interaction where customers are already near a sign or object, or where a clean visual design or limited light makes a camera scan less convenient. Because tapping requires compatible hardware and close placement, mark the tap point clearly. NFC Forum promotes a Wayfinding Mark to show that an object is NFC-enabled and indicate where to tap; Apple’s NFC Human Interface Guidelines describe platform considerations for close-range tag reading.

Offer both when alternatives are useful
Where space and budget permit, a visible QR code alongside a marked NFC tap gives customers options. The QR code remains an obvious alternative for someone without NFC access or familiarity with tapping; NFC supplies a close-range route for someone who prefers it. This is an access choice, not evidence that either format will outperform the other.
Keep the destination specific and under business control
Link each sign or tag to a page for the location where it appears. A business-controlled page can remain useful when hours, menus, services, or campaigns change; update the page rather than letting an old printed sign send customers to stale information. A direct URL is simple and avoids dependence on an intermediary redirect service.

A redirect or dynamic-code service can make it possible to change a destination without replacing a printed code, and may offer analytics. It also creates a dependency and potential privacy considerations. Before using one, determine who can change the destination, what scan data is logged, how long it is retained, whether the service will remain available, and whether links or data can be exported.
Build trust into the physical sign and link
Neither a familiar logo nor the presence of a QR code or NFC tag proves that a destination belongs to the business. A QR sticker can be replaced or used to misdirect, and an NFC tag can also direct a phone to a URL. The IETF’s RFC 9238 discusses QR-code trust assumptions, privacy risks from per-device or per-customer short URLs, and the possibility that a shortening service changes where a link leads. Its subject is QR-coded Manufacturer Usage Description URLs, not local-business signage, so those points are relevant as general cautions rather than a direct study of business signs.

- Inspect public signs and tags periodically for added stickers, damage, or other tampering.
- Have staff and customers check the destination shown on a phone before proceeding if it looks unexpected.
Security guidance for NFC must also be read in context. NIST SP 800-63B covers wireless threats, including NFC, in authentication settings; it does not establish that ordinary public-information NFC links are safer or less safe than printed QR codes. NIST’s RFID security bulletin likewise explains that risks vary by system and business process.

- Choose the final destination and confirm that it is specific to the physical location.
- Encode the NFC tag with the intended NDEF record, if using NFC, and generate the QR code with the intended URL.
- Install the sign or tag where customers will encounter it. Check QR visibility, lighting, contrast, and scanning distance; make the NFC tap point obvious.
- Test the actual installed display with representative iPhone and Android devices, using the camera and NFC settings customers are likely to have. Confirm the destination and on-screen prompt behave as expected.
- Recheck the destination and physical condition of public displays on a regular schedule and after changing the linked page or service.
What adoption figures do—and do not—show
In a 2022 announcement summarizing a global consumer study commissioned by NFC Forum, 44% of 2,019 respondents said they used contactless technology daily or nearly every day. That figure concerns contactless use generally; it does not compare QR with NFC for local-business information or show which format customers prefer at a particular site. NFC Forum’s June 7, 2022 announcement also quoted executive director Mike McCamon saying, “We are seeing a global trend of the expanding use of NFC. Connecting phones and smart devices to all the things around us has never been so easy.”
