Lucid Motors announced a U.S. workforce reduction on May 24, 2024. TechCrunch reported at the time that it affected about 400 workers, or roughly 6% of the workforce; Lucid’s SEC-filed announcement did not state a headcount. The cuts came as the company was preparing its Gravity SUV, whose production began in December 2024—not ahead of a launch still to come.
What Lucid announced in May 2024
Lucid said the reduction covered U.S. employees and contractors at all levels, including leaders and mid-level managers. Hourly manufacturing and logistics workers were excluded, according to the company’s May 24 employee announcement filed with the SEC. Why Lucid said it was cutting jobs
Lucid described the decision as an effort to optimize resources and control costs while pursuing its business goals. Then-CEO Peter Rawlinson said the Gravity program was not yet generating revenue: “I’m confident Lucid will deliver the world’s best SUV and dramatically expand our total addressable market, but we aren’t generating revenue from the program yet.” He added, “As always we must remain vigilant about costs.” Both statements appeared in the employee announcement dated May 24, 2024.

The company’s explanation connects the cuts to cost discipline during the Gravity’s development, but it does not establish that the SUV alone caused the layoffs or that the reduction improved Lucid’s financial condition.
Gravity production began later in 2024
When Lucid announced the job reduction, it said it aimed to begin Gravity production at the end of 2024. Lucid later reported that production began in December 2024 and described the vehicle as arriving on the road in late 2024. How the 2024 cuts differ from Lucid’s 2026 reduction
Lucid disclosed a separate workforce reduction in a June 22, 2026 SEC filing. The company said the plan affected approximately 18% of its then-current U.S. workforce and estimated annualized savings of approximately $158 million. In an August 2026 quarterly release, Lucid described an operational reset and reported testing Gravity production-validation vehicles in its robotaxi program.
