Apple reportedly planned to stop announcing software features months or years before they are ready to ship. Bloomberg reporters Mark Gurman and Drake Bennett made that claim in a report summarized by MacRumors on May 18, 2025. Apple has not publicly confirmed a formal announcement policy, so this is a reported strategy—not an established corporate rule.
The change was linked to delayed personalized Siri capabilities and next-generation CarPlay. Later reporting through 2026 shows that Siri development and schedules remained unsettled, making the episode as much a lesson about delivery credibility as about secrecy.
What Apple reportedly wants to change
The reported plan is narrower than “Apple will stop announcing features.” It would mostly avoid revealing software capabilities more than a few months before launch, particularly across platforms such as iPhone, iPad and Mac. MacRumors described the claim here: Apple will reportedly be more cautious about announcing new features well in advance. A related MacRumors guide says the approach could apply broadly to Apple software platforms: Mark Gurman coverage guide.
That distinction matters because Apple uses several kinds of disclosure:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Disclosure | What it tells users | Risk if plans change |
|---|---|---|
| Concept or research preview | A direction Apple is exploring | High; it may never become a product |
| Event demonstration | A feature Apple wants associated with a product or platform | High if the underlying system is unfinished |
| “Coming later this year” | A broad delivery window | Customers may treat it as a commitment |
| Developer or public beta | Testing access, not necessarily general availability | Functionality, timing and device coverage can change |
| Feature in the next major release | A relatively near-term shipping intention | Lower, but staged or regional rollout can still apply |
Nothing in the 2025 report establishes a ban on betas, developer previews or long-term research. It describes a preference for making consumer promises closer to a release and after more internal readiness work.
Why delayed Siri made the issue urgent
At WWDC 2024, Apple previewed more personalized Siri capabilities as part of Apple Intelligence and said they would become available within the following year. The features were important to the company’s artificial-intelligence story and to marketing around the iPhone 16 generation. They did not arrive on the expected schedule.
In March 2025, Bloomberg reported that Siri leadership privately described the delays as “ugly and embarrassing” and acknowledged that promoting the technology before it was ready had made the situation worse. Read the report at Bloomberg. This was an account of an internal meeting, not a public Apple admission.

The practical problem was larger than a missed date. The demonstration helped sell a strategic narrative: Apple’s devices would gain useful, context-aware AI. When the promised functions were absent or delayed, customers and reviewers evaluated existing hardware against capabilities they could not use, while competitors gained an easy point of comparison.

CarPlay shows the longer lead-time problem
Apple announced next-generation CarPlay at WWDC 2022 and indicated a 2024 arrival window. That timing was missed. The episode involved more than an ordinary software update because vehicle integrations require automaker participation, certification and regional deployment.
CarPlay Ultra was eventually announced in 2025, with initial rollout described as beginning in high-end Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada. CarPlay Ultra should not automatically be treated as identical to every capability shown in the 2022 next-generation CarPlay presentation, or as proof that the entire earlier vision had shipped.

Why Apple announces early—and why it can backfire
Advance notice has legitimate value. Developers can prepare for APIs and operating-system changes; automakers and accessory makers can plan integrations; investors and partners can see Apple’s direction; and WWDC announcements can give customers a reason to follow the platform’s future.
The costs rise when a polished demonstration is not backed by a stable implementation:
- Customers may buy hardware expecting features that are unavailable.
- Reviews and buying decisions can be based on promised rather than shipped capabilities.
- Old marketing materials can keep circulating after a delay.
- Developers may spend resources preparing for APIs or behavior that changes.
- Competitors receive a detailed view of Apple’s intended roadmap.
- Repeated schedule changes reduce the credibility of later “coming soon” statements.
- A shipped feature may be narrower, device-limited or materially different from the original demonstration.
Siri was especially exposed because Apple Intelligence was central to Apple’s competitive positioning. The March 2025 Bloomberg account connected the reputational damage to the decision to promote technology before it was ready.

Is the policy official?
No public Apple statement confirms a rule governing how far ahead the company may announce software features. The accurate description is therefore “Apple reportedly planned” or “Apple was said to be reconsidering” its timing. The report does not show that every future announcement will be delayed, that Apple has returned to total secrecy, or that the approach covers hardware, services and every product category.

The evidence points to a mixed result rather than a verified policy success. Bloomberg continued to report future Siri work before release:
- On January 21, 2026, Bloomberg reported plans for a substantially revamped Siri in iOS 27: report.
- On February 11, 2026, it reported that Siri features targeted for iOS 26.4 were encountering internal-testing snags and could move to iOS 26.5 or iOS 27: report.
- On March 24, 2026, Bloomberg described a planned Siri app and “Ask Siri” interface: report.
- On March 31, 2026, it reported testing of multiple commands in one Siri request across iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27: report.
- On May 12, 2026, it reported planned iOS 27 Camera customization and Siri changes: report.
These are reports of internal plans and testing, not confirmation that the features shipped. They also show why a reduction in Apple’s own stage announcements would not eliminate public information: journalists can still report leaked roadmaps.

How to judge whether Apple has improved
The meaningful test is reliability, not silence. Watch for:
- Announcement-to-availability time: Is the feature close to release or years away?
- Release-window accuracy: Does “later this year” describe a broad launch, a limited beta or a staged rollout?
- Feature completeness: Does the shipped function match the demonstration?
- Coverage: Are advertised devices, languages and regions included?
- Developer readiness: Are APIs, documentation and SDK support available when developers need them?
- Delay transparency: Does Apple explain a change or leave old promises in circulation?
Readers should also separate an Apple announcement from a Bloomberg report about internal plans. A leaked feature can be publicly discussed long before Apple formally commits to it, even if Apple has tightened its own presentation schedule.
What a more credible announcement would look like
A cautious approach could involve announcing only features that have passed meaningful quality gates, using “in development” instead of a specific season, separating research previews from consumer promises, and limiting major event claims to capabilities expected in the next release. Apple could also state device, language and regional limits up front and distinguish a beta API from a generally available consumer feature.
Those are practical options, not confirmed Apple procedures. The central lesson is to treat “coming later this year,” “available in a future software update,” “in development” and “available in beta” as different levels of commitment.

Apple was reported in May 2025 to be moving away from announcing software features long before launch, after delayed Siri and CarPlay promises damaged confidence. Apple has not confirmed that policy, and 2026 reporting shows Siri schedules and testing problems continued. The safest conclusion is that Apple recognized the cost of premature promises, but there is not enough evidence to say it has solved the delivery problem or ended early previews.
