That event was an early signal, not the final verdict. By August 18, 2026, Valkey had reached release 9.1.1, maintained older branches, attracted more than 150 reported core contributors, and appeared in managed offerings from major cloud providers. Those developments make Valkey a credible, actively maintained Redis-compatible alternative—but not an automatic, risk-free replacement for every Redis deployment.
What Valkey announced on June 18, 2024
The Linux Foundation announced six new Valkey partners after the inaugural Valkey Contributor Summit, held June 6–8 in Seattle. The announcement listed participation and support; it did not assign every company the same funding, code-contribution, governance, or product-integration role.
| New partner | Why it mattered |
|---|---|
| Ampere | Its Arm-based server processors broadened the project’s hardware and architecture interests. |
| AlmaLinux OS Foundation | Connected Valkey with Linux distribution packaging and enterprise Linux users. |
| Broadcom | Added a major infrastructure and enterprise technology company; the PR Newswire version says “Broadcom/VMWare,” while the Linux Foundation page says Broadcom. |
| DigitalOcean | Represented a cloud provider serving developers and smaller businesses. |
| Memurai | Announced a Valkey-compatible edition with enterprise support on Windows and Linux. |
| Instaclustr by NetApp | Added a managed-data-services perspective for organizations seeking hosted support. |
The existing group included Aiven, Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Canonical, Chainguard, Ericsson, Heroku, Huawei, Google Cloud, Oracle, Percona, Snap, and Verizon. The announcement is available from the Linux Foundation and in a PR Newswire distribution.

What Memurai and Instaclustr actually promised
Memurai said its Valkey-compatible edition would provide enterprise-grade support on Windows and Linux and that it intended to contribute fixes, patches, enhancements, and its Memurai SQL Search module to the community. Those are Memurai’s stated plans, not a blanket finding that every contribution was completed.
Instaclustr said it supported Valkey as an open-source in-memory data store and wanted to help customers obtain business value from open source while contributing to the project. The announcement did not specify a version, service-level agreement, price, migration guarantee, or quantified engineering commitment.
Why the Redis licensing context mattered
Valkey was created in March 2024 after Redis changed Redis licensing terms. The initial project was based on Redis OSS 7.2.4 and retained the BSD 3-Clause license, according to the Linux Foundation launch announcement and Valkey’s license documentation.
This was a dispute about practical licensing, redistribution, and managed-service competition—not proof that Redis instantly became unusable for every commercial user. “Open source,” source availability, commercial redistribution rights, and the economics of offering a hosted service are related but distinct questions.
For cloud providers, Linux distributors, and businesses running core infrastructure, a vendor-neutral project under Linux Foundation stewardship offered a way to reduce dependence on one company’s licensing and roadmap decisions. Governance can reduce that dependence, although large contributors may still have disproportionate engineering influence.

Why the partner mix was more important than the logo count
The partners covered different layers of the stack:
- Cloud providers such as AWS and Google Cloud.
- Enterprise infrastructure companies including Oracle, Huawei, Broadcom, and NetApp.
- Operating-system ecosystems represented by Canonical and AlmaLinux.
- Hosted database providers such as Aiven, DigitalOcean, Instaclustr, Percona, and UpCloud.
- Hardware architecture through Ampere.
- Windows compatibility and commercial support through Memurai’s announced offering.
- Developer, security, and platform tooling through participants such as Heroku and Chainguard.
A sustainable alternative needs independent contributors, competing clouds, production packaging, compatible clients and tools, and governance that does not depend on one vendor. The 2024 announcement demonstrated interest. It did not, by itself, prove adoption, market share, or equal contribution from every partner.

What changed technically in Valkey 9.1
The 9.1 announcement highlights standalone Lua scripting, more granular multi-tenant security, memory-optimized data structures, security and observability improvements, performance work, and updated modules and tools including Valkey Search, Valkey Admin, and Valkey GLIDE.
AWS documents up to 20% lower memory use for common strings under 128 bytes and up to 10% lower memory use for sorted sets in its Valkey 9.1 engine implementation. These are AWS’s documented figures, not universal results for every workload or self-hosted build; data structures, command mix, topology, persistence, hardware, and configuration all matter. See AWS engine-version documentation and the Linux Foundation release.
Is Valkey a drop-in Redis replacement?
Often compatible does not mean identical. Valkey began from Redis OSS 7.2.4 and retains substantial command and client compatibility. Google describes Valkey 7.2 as compatible with Redis 7.2 and popular clients such as Jedis, redis-py, node-redis, and go-redis in its Memorystore announcement.
Migration risk remains where an application relies on:
- Redis-specific modules such as JSON, search, time-series, or probabilistic data structures.
- Version-specific commands, cluster behavior, persistence, replication, ACLs, or authentication.
- Provider-managed backups, failover, resharding, monitoring, and networking.
- Client-library features or operational tools that have not yet caught up.
Google warns that Memorystore for Valkey supports only a subset of the full Valkey command library, so a managed-service migration requires provider-specific testing. Valkey’s own technical topics are documented at valkey.io/topics.

Memorystore for Valkey supports cluster-mode-enabled and cluster-mode-disabled configurations. Billing depends on node type, provisioned capacity, region, replicas, and optional AOF persistence, with per-second calculation. Google documents 20% discounts for one-year and 40% for three-year committed-use terms, subject to its rules at the CUD page. Its overview lists Valkey 9.1 as Preview as of July 27, 2026, a managed-service status rather than a statement that upstream Valkey 9.1 is experimental. Details are in the product overview and pricing page.
Self-hosted Valkey
Self-hosting offers maximum control on Kubernetes, bare metal, or private cloud and avoids a single cloud provider’s service abstraction. The trade-off is ownership of patching, capacity planning, backups, failover, security, monitoring, and on-call work. BSD licensing removes a traditional software-license purchase; it does not remove infrastructure or engineering costs.
Other ecosystem providers
The 2026 ecosystem list names Aiven, anynines, BetterDB, DigitalOcean, Instaclustr by NetApp, Momento, Oracle, Percona, Tencent Cloud, and UpCloud among others. They are not interchangeable products. Check each provider’s current Valkey versions, regions, supported commands, SLA, backups, and pricing before committing.
