Give what fits your budget and your relationship with the couple, and do not treat the cost of your reception meal as a bill to repay. If you want a US reference point, The Knot’s guidance, updated August 20, 2026, offers relationship-based ranges. Those ranges are editorial suggestions, not rules.
Start with what your budget can absorb
The Emily Post Institute’s guidance on choosing a wedding gift names three factors to weigh: your budget, how close you are to the couple, and what the couple would likely want. It then stops short of a dollar formula, because finances and relationships differ too much for one number to work for everyone. Its page says it plainly: “There is no rule, so it is entirely up to you.”
In practice, that means choosing a figure you could spend without strain. Do not borrow for a gift or feel obliged to match the couple’s wedding spending. If you are close to the couple, you may reasonably give more than a guest who is a casual acquaintance, and if you are not, you do not owe a larger gift to make up the difference.
Relationship-based ranges: a US reference point
The Knot’s August 2026 article suggests the following ranges by relationship. They are one publisher’s guidance for US readers, not an etiquette standard.

| Your relationship to the couple | Suggested range (The Knot, updated August 20, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Distant relative or friend-of-friend | $50–$100 |
| Extended family, acquaintance or coworker | $100–$150 |
| Good friend | $100–$200 |
| Best friend or immediate family member | $250 or more |
The same article reports two figures from its own Guest Study: an average wedding gift of $150, and a guest split of 40% giving cash, 50% a physical gift and 10% a gift card. The article does not state the survey’s field dates or sample size, so read these as one company’s reported averages rather than a measure of all wedding guests.
Why the meal does not set the amount
A common rule of thumb holds that a gift should cover the per-person cost of the reception. Emily Post calls that expectation a myth. The Knot and Vogue’s expert roundup also advise against basing the gift on the per-person wedding cost or on how formal the event is. Lizzie Post, Co-President of the Emily Post Institute, made the point in The Knot’s article: “The amount of your gift does not have to cover your head or plate, which is a common misconception.”

The same logic applies to formality. A black-tie evening does not oblige a larger gift than a backyard ceremony, because the cost of the event is the couple’s decision, not a measure of what you owe.
Cash, checks, registry items and group gifts
All four routes are accepted. Choose based on what suits your budget and what the couple has asked for.

Registry item
A registry purchase is optional. Emily Post calls the registry a convenience. Its wedding registry etiquette guidance adds that couples should offer a mix of item types and price points, which gives guests a range to choose from. Honeymoon contributions may also appear on a registry.

Travel, other events and a tight budget
- Travel costs count. The Knot advises accounting for travel and accommodation. A guest who is traveling a long way may reasonably choose a smaller gift.
- A tight budget is a valid reason to give less. A modest, sincere gift is appropriate when money is short. Do not go into debt to keep up with other guests.
- Pooling is an option. If the budget is the limit, a group gift lets you contribute a share toward something larger.
When to send the gift
- Before the wedding or soon after. Emily Post advises sending the gift before the wedding or soon afterward.
- Three months as the outer limit. Emily Post’s page says a gift should arrive no later than three months after the wedding.
- Send cash ahead of the day. Vogue advises mailing cash or a check before the event rather than carrying it to the reception.
- Regional customs vary. Local norms may set different timing, so check with people from the couple’s community if you are unsure.
Destination weddings
Expectations for destination weddings depend on context. Vogue quotes a planner who says that a guest’s presence can be the gift, given the cost and time of travel. Emily Post notes that it is gracious for couples to tell guests if their presence is the present. A guest who attends should not feel obliged to add a large gift on top of the travel cost, but a gift remains a normal choice if it suits the relationship and the budget.
Where these ranges stop applying
The ranges above are US benchmarks. The sources do not establish comparable amounts for other countries, cultures or financial contexts. Outside the US, use the local custom and your own budget as the guide, and avoid treating any dollar range as a universal standard.
