Zootopia 2 has already passed $1 billion worldwide. Disney said in December 2025 that the film would reach that mark 17 days into its release, and by March 2026 the company reported the worldwide total at $1.9 billion. The sections below separate what Disney announced from what box-office trackers display, and explain why a gross figure says little about profit.
The milestone has already happened
Disney’s December 12, 2025 announcement said Zootopia 2 would pass $1 billion worldwide after 17 days in release. At that point the film had collected $986.1 million globally, made up of $232.7 million domestic and $753.4 million international. The announcement framed the pace as the fastest of any animated film rated by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and of any PG-rated film. Disney’s own statement is the basis for that comparison, and it has not been independently audited.

Because the milestone is in the past, the question for readers is no longer whether the film will reach $1 billion but how large its run became and how the figures were reported. Disney’s January 18, 2026 announcement put the worldwide total at $1.703 billion, with $390 million domestic and $1.313 billion international. Disney also said the film had passed Inside Out 2 as the highest-grossing animated MPA film at that time.
Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, said in the January announcement: “This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible.” Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said in the December announcement that the milestone meant audiences were “coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together.” Both are company statements about the studio’s own film.

Latest tracker totals and why they differ
Box-office trackers update their totals as reports come in, and they do not always agree. When checked on October 8, 2026, The Numbers and Box Office Mojo displayed the following figures. Quote them with the tracker name and date, not as a single reconciled number.

The two trackers show the same domestic figure, and the worldwide gap of about $3.7 million comes from international reporting. Domestic earnings were roughly 23 percent of the worldwide total on both trackers, compared with the same share in Disney’s January snapshot. Neither tracker is an official Disney accounting document.
What “fastest” and “highest-grossing” actually mean
Disney’s claims come with narrow comparison groups. The fastest-to-$1-billion claim applies to animated MPA films and to PG-rated films, not to all films. The highest-grossing claim applies to animated MPA films as of January 2026. In that January snapshot, Disney placed Zootopia 2 first among animated MPA films and ninth among all films worldwide at that time. Comparisons across different groups should not be mixed; a film can lead one list and sit well below the top of another.

Gross is not profit
The Numbers lists a production budget of $150 million. Dividing the displayed worldwide gross by that budget gives a ratio of about 12.5 to 1. That ratio is a headline figure, not a profit estimate, and it should not be described as the studio’s return.
What the ratio leaves out
- Exhibitor shares. Cinemas keep a portion of each ticket sale, and that share varies by market and by the length of the run. The gross includes money that theaters keep.
- Marketing costs. Advertising, promotion, and events for a major animated release are typically separate from the production budget.
- Distribution costs and fees. The studio’s share of box-office revenue is reduced by distribution costs before it reaches the company’s accounts.
- Other revenue. Streaming, home video, and merchandise earnings sit outside the box-office total, and their terms are not part of this figure.
Without these inputs, no reader can calculate net earnings from the box-office total alone. Disney’s own financial reporting is the place to look for a company-level view.
