Why might the reported salary be so high?
Athletic is retaining a leading player
Williams had established himself in Athletic’s first team before signing the extension. The club says that in his first five senior-team seasons he made 167 official appearances and scored 31 goals, and contributed to the Copa del Rey win and European qualification. A salary reported near the top of the squad is consistent with a club placing a high value on keeping a player central to its sporting plans. The club was competing to keep him
At the signing event, Athletic described its “Athletic WIN” concept as its model prevailing over powerful offers from other clubs. AS reported that proposals from Barcelona and Bayern were rejected and also described interest from Bayern, Chelsea and Arsenal. The extension supports sporting continuity and club identity
Athletic presented the renewal as a boost to its football project during the season of its return to the Champions League after an 11-season absence. Williams said he wanted to continue making history at San Mamés with the fans and his family. The club also notes that he joined its academy at under-12 level. Together, these points help explain why the renewal has significance beyond the length of a contract, though they do not disclose how Athletic calculated his wage.

How to interpret the €7 million estimate
“Net per season” is the basis AS used for its approximate starting figure; it should not be treated as a confirmed Athletic payroll number or compared directly with a gross-salary figure. The report describes a stepped contract with variables, so the estimate is not necessarily a flat amount paid identically in every season. The club has not published the full wage terms, and the available sources do not establish the exact amount Williams receives in a given year.
