Re:

Why John Textor Sold His Crystal Palace Stake—and Who Took Over Sheffield Wednesday

Textor said Crystal Palace was no longer a perfect fit for his portfolio. Sheffield Wednesday’s completed 2026 transfer was to Arise Capital Partners, not Textor.

John Textor’s reported reason for seeking a buyer for his Crystal Palace stake was that the club was no longer a perfect fit for his portfolio. But the claim that he is now taking over Sheffield Wednesday is outdated: the English Football League (EFL) and the club’s joint administrators say Wednesday’s assets were transferred to Arise Capital Partners LLC in May 2026.

Why was Textor leaving Crystal Palace?

Textor was reported to be seeking a buyer for his Palace stake after saying the club was no longer a perfect fit for his portfolio of football interests. That is his reported explanation, not proof that portfolio fit was the only factor in the decision. The report of Textor’s explanation does not establish a complete account of his motives.

What did the Palace ownership change mean?

Textor’s Palace stake is now a historical matter, not a current ownership position. The Premier League reported an ownership change involving Woody Johnson in 2025. The Premier League’s account places that change before Sheffield Wednesday’s 2026 sale.

How did UEFA’s ownership rules affect Palace?

Textor’s interests in both Crystal Palace and Olympique Lyonnais brought UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules into the picture. The Premier League’s account of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) outcome says Palace’s appeal to play in the Europa League was rejected. This is relevant context for the Palace situation, but it does not show that the regulatory issue alone caused Textor to seek a buyer. The Premier League’s account of the CAS outcome describes the appeal decision.

Is Textor taking over Sheffield Wednesday?

No verified transaction supports that claim. On 2 May 2026, the EFL said Wednesday’s administrators had concluded an agreement to transfer the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The joint administrators separately confirmed the completed sale. The consortium is led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin—not Textor. The EFL announcement and the administrators’ confirmation identify the buyer and the completed transfer.

What changed for Sheffield Wednesday after the sale?

The EFL said Wednesday had exited administration and would not receive the 15-point deduction it had described. The club remained subject to a budget restriction for the next two seasons, and player registrations were to be governed by an agreed business plan. Those are the specific conditions reported by the EFL; they should not be read as a complete description of the club’s finances.

What is established—and what is not

  • Textor’s reported explanation for seeking a buyer for his Palace stake was that the club was no longer a perfect fit for his portfolio.
  • The Palace stake sale is historical; the Premier League reported a 2025 ownership change involving Woody Johnson.
  • UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules were relevant to the Palace and Lyon overlap, and Palace’s Europa League appeal was rejected, but the available account does not establish that this was Textor’s sole motive.
  • Sheffield Wednesday’s assets were transferred to Arise Capital Partners in May 2026; the verified buyer was not Textor.
