The usual request described in Cash App’s partner documentation is your legal name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your SSN—but some accounts or situations may require more information.
Why Cash App asks for your SSN
Cash App says identity verification helps prevent fraud and meets identity-verification requirements. Its U.S. Terms also say verification helps Cash App and certain banking partners meet their obligations. Cash App may request information such as your legal name, address, date of birth, SSN, or government-issued ID, and may validate information through third parties.
That is Cash App’s stated rationale; it does not establish that every customer must provide a full SSN in every circumstance. The information requested depends on the account and the service you are trying to use. Cash App Security · U.S. Terms of Service
What information might be requested?
Cash App partner documentation describes the standard identity-verification request as your legal name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your SSN. In some cases, it may also ask for:

- Your full SSN
- Your residential address
- An unexpired government-issued photo ID
- Income verification or information about the source of funds
Cash App’s customer identity-verification documentation describes these as possible requirements, not a checklist every customer must complete. Its Privacy Notice, effective June 8, 2026, also identifies SSN, passport, and driver’s license information as identification data that may be collected for verification.
What happens if you do not provide it?
Cash App’s U.S. Terms say some features depend on providing requested information and successfully verifying your identity. If you decline a request or Cash App cannot verify you to its satisfaction, your account may remain restricted and some services may be unavailable. The terms do not mean that every account function stops or that the same restriction applies to every customer; the effect depends on the verification request and the service involved. How Cash App may use your SSN to verify identity
Cash App’s Privacy Notice describes identification information as part of account and identity verification, and says it may receive information from identity-verification services and other sources.
Cash App also publishes an eCBSV consent form describing one specific kind of check: it authorizes the Social Security Administration to tell Block, through Socure Inc., whether the submitted name, SSN, and date of birth match SSA records, including the basis for a no-match response. That form authorizes a one-time validation within the next 90 days. It describes the authorization in that form; it does not show that every Cash App SSN request uses this check. How to tell whether the request is genuine
An SSN request appearing in Cash App’s own verification flow is different from an unsolicited message or call claiming to be from support. Cash App’s U.S. Terms say its representatives will never ask you for your SSN, password, PIN, or full debit card number. Do not send those details in response to an unexpected call, text, email, or social-media message.
Instead, open Cash App yourself and check whether the verification request appears there. If it does not, or the request seems inconsistent with the app’s flow, stop and contact Support through the app. Cash App’s security page directs customers to report suspicious transactions or contact support through in-app chat. Its Terms list 1-800-969-1940 as its sole support phone number. U.S. Terms of Service · Cash App Security

- Open the app directly. Do not use an unexpected message link to reach a sign-in or verification page.
- Review the in-app request. Follow the official verification flow and provide only the information it requests.
- Pause if anything seems wrong. Do not send your SSN, password, or PIN to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Confirm through Support. Use the Support option in the app or the phone number Cash App lists in its U.S. Terms if you need to verify what information is required.
Do not submit false information or use an unofficial verification service. If Cash App cannot verify your identity, its terms allow some services to remain restricted.
