Why Was Coinbase Stock Down in 2025? May and Late-Year Pressures Explained

Coinbase's 2025 stock pressure came in distinct episodes: a May customer-data theft disclosure, weaker Q2 revenue and a December crypto-market selloff. Later results improved, and the available sources do not establish a precise full-year stock decline.

Coinbase stock faced distinct pressures at different points in 2025: a May customer-data theft disclosure and weaker second-quarter results, followed by a late-year crypto-market selloff. Those episodes help explain particular declines, but the available figures do not establish one cause—or a precise full-year price drop—for COIN.

Why Coinbase stock came under pressure in 2025

Coinbase Global (Nasdaq: COIN) is exposed to crypto-market conditions. Its annual filing identifies crypto-asset volatility and market sentiment as risks to its business, so changes in prices, volatility and customer trading can affect results and investor expectations. That exposure is context, not proof that any one market factor caused a particular day’s share-price move. Coinbase’s 2025 Form 10-K also identifies regulatory changes or scrutiny and macroeconomic conditions—including interest rates, inflation, tariffs and trade restrictions—as risks.

The year’s documented pressure points were not identical. The May disclosure was a company-specific shock; the second quarter brought sequential declines in reported revenue; and the December 1 decline occurred amid a broader crypto and risk-off selloff. The stock’s movement and Coinbase’s operating performance should be considered separately.

May: customer-data theft added company-specific pressure

In May, Coinbase disclosed that criminals had obtained customer information and tried to extort the company. The Associated Press reported that Coinbase had not specified how many customers’ data was stolen. It also reported that COIN shares were down 6% around midday after the disclosure; that is an intraday observation, not a measure of the full day’s or year’s return. The AP report described Coinbase’s intended reimbursement response.

Coinbase later attributed $307 million in second-quarter expenses to the incident. That company-reported expense figure shows the event had a financial impact beyond the immediate headline, but it does not establish how much of any broader share-price decline the incident caused. Coinbase’s Q2 2025 shareholder letter also reported that operating expenses increased.

Q2: revenue fell sharply from Q1

Coinbase’s July 31, 2025 shareholder letter reported weaker sequential results in the second quarter. Total revenue was $1.5 billion, down 26% from Q1. Transaction revenue was $764 million, down 39% quarter over quarter, while subscription and services revenue was $656 million, down 6% quarter over quarter. Management described the quarter as solid amid lower volatility, while cautioning against extrapolating the results. The Q2 shareholder letter is the source for these company-reported figures.

The larger drop in transaction revenue is relevant because trading activity and transaction income are tied to crypto-market conditions. Subscription and services revenue also declined, but it has separate drivers; Coinbase’s outlook discussed crypto-asset prices and stablecoin revenue. A quarterly slowdown can weigh on expectations, but it does not by itself establish how investors priced COIN or explain a particular stock move.

December: a separate crypto-market selloff

On December 1, 2025, Coinbase shares fell 4.8% amid a broader crypto and technology-related risk-off move, according to the Associated Press. The AP reported that Bitcoin was about 33% below its October 6 record by December 1. These are contemporaneous market observations, not a quantified attribution of COIN’s decline to Bitcoin. The AP report discussed risk-off sentiment and pressures on crypto assets.

Coinbase’s disclosed sensitivity to crypto prices and market sentiment helps explain why a sharp market drawdown can pressure the stock. The annual filing’s references to regulation and macroeconomic conditions are risk disclosures; they do not show that those factors caused the December 1 move.

Why the full-year picture was more mixed

The Q2 declines did not continue unchanged through the rest of the year. Coinbase’s Q3 2025 shareholder letter reported total revenue of $1.9 billion, up 25% from Q2, and transaction revenue of $1.0 billion, up 37% quarter over quarter. The Q3 letter provides the company’s reported results.

In its February 12, 2026 full-year letter, Coinbase reported that 2025 total revenue grew 9% year over year and total trading volume grew 156% year over year. The full-year letter provides those annual comparisons. These operating results offer counter-context to weaker periods; they do not establish that the stock was undervalued or explain its complete 2025 price performance.

What the evidence can—and cannot—show

  • Company-specific shock: The May data-theft disclosure was followed by a reported intraday share decline, and Coinbase later attributed $307 million of Q2 expenses to the incident.
  • Operating pressure: Q2 revenue declined sequentially, especially transaction revenue, before Q3 revenue and transaction revenue rebounded quarter over quarter.
  • Market exposure: COIN fell on December 1 during a wider selloff, as Bitcoin was well below its October record. The reported timing does not quantify the share move’s causes.
  • Full-year price return: The cited sources do not establish a single comparable statistic for COIN’s 2025 price decline or assign causal weights to the year’s events. No exact annual decline should be inferred from the episode-specific figures above.

This is a retrospective account of reported events and results, not a forecast or individualized investment recommendation.
