Start with the host’s rules
Most white elephant exchanges follow the same basic flow, but the details vary by household, office and friend group. Amazon Pay Team explained in a November 25, 2022 article that the exchange goes by several names and that its rules are not fixed. Ask the host about these points before you shop:
- Spending limit. Find out whether the figure is a fixed amount or a range, and whether it includes tax and shipping. Buying a gift at the top of the range and then paying shipping is a common way to go over budget.
- Turn order and steals. In the classic setup described by Hallmark Ideas & Inspiration on May 28, 2026, each guest brings a mystery gift, draws a number to set the order, and then on each turn either chooses a gift or steals one that has already been opened. Hosts may limit how many times a single gift can be stolen, so ask about that limit before you buy.
- Theme or direction. Hallmark recommends a party theme or giving guests direction. If the host has one, it will narrow your choices faster than any list.
Set the budget and the group before you shop
Two questions decide most of your choices: how much you can spend, and who will be unwrapping the gift. Match your pick to the group:
- Coworkers: Pick something office-safe with a light joke at most. A gift that reads as a dig can make the rest of the week awkward.
- Close friends: Inside jokes and bold novelty usually land well because the group already knows each other’s tastes.
- Family: Mixed ages and interests call for a gift that works for several people, such as a game or a shared-use item.
- Strangers: WIRED says its guide is written for groups that may include people who do not know each other well. Choose a gift that needs no explanation and carries no personal assumptions.

Ideas worth a closer look
Useful and amusing: the weighted eye mask and LED strips
WIRED’s 2026 guide includes the Nodpod weighted eye mask as a sleep-oriented gift. Its author, Nena Farrell, wrote a personal anecdote in the same guide: “One of the white elephant gifts I fought for last holiday season was this set of iridescent glasses.” That is her own experience of wanting a gift in a past exchange, not a test performed for this article. The LED light strips are the Govee RGBIC Pro, which WIRED calls its reviewer’s favorite budget strip. That is the publication’s recommendation, not an independent evaluation here. The strips suit a group where someone wants a room upgrade, and they need a power source and a place to mount them.
Joke packaging: Prank-O boxes
