Whether a card works depends on the storefront region tied to your account, your card issuer’s online-purchase settings, and the payment options Steam actually displays when you check out.
Which card brands Steam names
Steam publishes two lists that overlap but do not match. Its payment-history support page groups credit cards under six brands. Its refund-method page, which is scoped to the default displayed storefront, lists five brands as methods that can be refunded to the original payment method. The difference matters because a payment method can be accepted for purchase and still be unable to receive a refund in its own account.

Read the table as a map of what Steam names, not as a checkout guarantee. Neither source is a worldwide matrix, and the refund page is explicitly limited to the storefront it displays by default.
Why a brand list does not settle whether your card will work
Three things narrow the brand list in practice.
Your store region
Steam presents payment options by storefront. Its Australia pricing page, for example, lists international credit cards and cash transfer as payment categories for that region. A card that appears in one region’s options may not appear in another’s, so the country tied to your account is the first thing to check.

Your card issuer’s online settings
Steam’s support list is framed around credit-card brands. A debit card carrying a listed network logo can still be declined if your bank restricts online or card-not-present transactions, blocks international merchants, or requires a verification step that does not complete. The brand on the card is only one part of the transaction. Steam does not state that any particular debit card will work.
What Steam shows at checkout
The payment options displayed during checkout for your account’s region are the current, practical list. If a card you expected is missing, the brand list is not evidence that Steam will offer it to you at that moment.

How to check what you can pay with
- Confirm the country or region associated with your Steam account and the storefront you are buying from, since the options are shown per storefront.
- Start a purchase and read the payment options Steam displays. Treat that screen as the authoritative list for your account.
- If your card is one of the listed brands but is declined, check whether your issuer has online or international purchases switched on, and whether a spending limit or fraud block is active.
- Make sure the billing details you enter match the cardholder’s records (see the billing section below).
- If the card still fails, choose a different displayed method or add funds to your Steam Wallet using an accepted route, described below.
Refunds can go to Steam Wallet instead of your card
Steam’s refund page states that some payment methods do not support refunds to the original payment method. For those methods, an approved refund can only be issued to Steam Wallet. Whether a refund returns to your card therefore depends on how you paid, not only on which brand you used. If you are choosing between payment methods and refunds matter to you, check the refund-method page for your storefront before you buy.
Adding funds to Steam Wallet
Steam Wallet is an alternative route when a card is not an option. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says:

“You may place funds in your Steam Wallet up to a maximum amount determined by Valve, by credit card, prepaid card, promotional code, or any other payment method accepted by Steam.”
Two practical points follow. First, the wallet ceiling is set by Valve and can limit how much you add at once. Second, the methods accepted for a top-up are subject to the same regional variation as purchases. Steam’s support pages also list Steam Wallet Codes as a way to add funds. If you buy a third-party Wallet code, confirm that it is valid for your region and currency before you buy, because codes sold for one region may not redeem in another.

Billing information and location
Steam may ask for billing information even when you pay with Steam Wallet or a local payment method. Steam’s billing-information support page says location details can be needed for tax purposes. Enter the address that matches your card or payment method. Mismatched billing details are a common reason a card that is otherwise valid gets declined.
