A BHAG, or Big Hairy Audacious Goal, is a long-range target that people can grasp quickly, that is bold enough to pull effort toward it, and that has a finish line you can recognize when you reach it. Jim Collins and Jerry Porras developed the concept in Built to Last. For personal finance, a BHAG is the one long-term money goal that your near-term decisions are meant to serve, such as becoming debt-free or owning a home outright. It is not a budget category or a to-do list.
Where the term comes from
Collins’s official concept page describes a BHAG as a goal that is clear and compelling, needs little explanation, and is paired with long-term building and a sense of urgency in today’s work. The idea comes from Built to Last, which Collins wrote with Jerry Porras. According to Collins’s official books page, the book grew out of research into why some companies stay visionary across multiple generations. In his 1995 article “Building Companies to Last,” Collins says he and Porras spent six years on the project that led to the book.
The term is worth using carefully. It names one mechanism that visionary organizations used to make progress. It is not a formula for success, and the authors did not present it as the only way to move an organization forward.
How a BHAG differs from an ordinary goal and a vision statement
Most people have set ordinary goals (lose 10 pounds, save $5,000 this year) and have read vision statements (a sentence about being the most trusted provider in a market). A BHAG sits between them. It is more specific than a vision statement and more ambitious than a routine target. The table below compares the three on the features that matter most for a long-range aim.

| Explanation needed | Little | Often a paragraph or more | Little; it should be understood in one sentence |
| Stretch | Modest, based on past performance | Varies widely | Bold enough that prudence might call it unreasonable |
| Personal-finance example | “Save $5,000 this year” | “Be financially secure and free to choose our work” | “Own our home outright before our youngest finishes high school” |

What makes a goal work as a BHAG
Collins and Porras describe a useful BHAG as one that has these qualities:
- Easy to grasp. A listener can repeat it without a slide deck.
- Tangible. It describes an outcome you could point to, not a mood.
- Energizing. It makes the work feel worth doing.
- Has a clear finish line. You can say when it has been reached.
Examples from the original sources
The U.S. moon mission
Collins and Porras reproduce President John F. Kennedy’s May 25, 1961, address in their excerpt from Built to Last. The sentence they quote is the clause that sets the goal:

The clause works as a BHAG because the outcome and the deadline are both stated. The excerpt also notes that the most optimistic scientific assessment of the chances in 1961 was fifty-fifty, while most experts were more pessimistic. Congress agreed to fund the goal immediately with $549 million, with billions more in the following five years, according to the same excerpt. Those figures are the authors’ account of the historical record, not independent estimates.
Boeing and the commercial jet
Collins’s excerpt describes Boeing’s commitment to establish itself as a major commercial-aircraft player even though it had little market presence and faced substantial development risk. The resulting 707 brought commercial aviation into the jet age. The example shows that a BHAG can be a bet on a capability you do not yet have, not only a target you can already see how to reach.

Sam Walton’s early store
In his 1995 article, Collins writes that Walton aimed to make his Newport store the best and most profitable in Arkansas within five years. Walton then set further goals as the company grew. The lesson for individuals is that a long-range aim can be followed by a sequence of nearer goals rather than replaced by them.
How to create a BHAG
The steps below are an editorial sequence built from the concept’s criteria and the cautionary material discussed later. They are not a validated method, and no time horizon or probability threshold is required.

Ask what you want the money to do for your life, and whether the goal would matter to you on a bad week. A net-worth number alone often fails that test. A goal such as “Never again borrow to cover a car repair” is tied to a purpose you can feel.
- Name one meaningful mountain. Choose one long-range aim. Keep it concrete enough that you know what achievement would look like, and short enough to say in a sentence.
- Set the finish line. Write the date or condition that proves it is done. “Debt-free” is vague; “All credit card and personal-loan balances paid to zero by June 30, 2031” is a finish line.
- Make it stretch. It should go beyond what your ordinary annual targets would produce. If your plan would deliver the same result as your current trajectory, it is a forecast, not a BHAG.
- Translate it into today’s decisions. Collins’s concept page asks what needs to happen today, tomorrow, and the next day. Break the aim into nearer milestones and leave room to test a plan and change it.
- Check that it motivates beyond the decision-maker. If the people affected, such as a partner or family members, cannot connect their daily choices to the outcome, revise the goal or explain it better.
Turning a BHAG into a personal-finance plan
A BHAG becomes useful when each milestone has a number, a date, and a named action. The example below is illustrative only and shows how the finish line and milestones connect.

| Layer | Example for a household |
|---|---|
| BHAG | Own our home outright before our youngest finishes high school |
| Finish line | Mortgage balance reaches zero on a stated date, with the date written down |
| Five-year milestone | Prepayments set so the mortgage is on track for the finish line date |
| Annual milestone | Recalculate the required monthly prepayment each January using the current balance and rate |
| Today’s action | Confirm the lender’s rules for extra principal payments, then set up one recurring transfer |
Review the milestones on a fixed schedule. If a milestone slips, change the plan rather than abandoning the BHAG. The finish line should stay fixed unless your circumstances change in a way that justifies revising it.

When the goal is vague or grandiose
A BHAG can turn into an empty slogan if it has no finish line, no milestones, and no link to daily work. Avoid writing a goal that only sounds impressive.
When it is disconnected from meaning
McKinsey’s article “How leaders kill meaning at work” describes a company that set an aggressive revenue target for all projects without articulating milestones, allowing room for a range of experiments, or connecting the target to what employees valued. In that case, the article says the goal undermined employees’ sense of purpose. That is one documented case, not proof that every ambitious goal has the same effect.

When process smothers the goal
In a 1999 Harvard Business Review article, “Turning Goals into Results: The Power of Catalytic Mechanisms,” Collins cautions that executives sometimes layer bureaucracy onto big goals through speeches, change initiatives, complicated incentives, rules, and checklists. For a household, the equivalent is a spreadsheet with 40 tabs that no one opens. Use process to support action, and stop adding process when it begins to replace action.
What the evidence does and does not show
In the Built to Last excerpt reproduced on Collins’s official site, Collins and Porras say they found more evidence of BHAG use in visionary companies than in comparison companies in 14 of 18 cases. That is the authors’ count from their own study, not a controlled test of outcomes. The source does not establish that BHAGs cause better results, and the authors say other progress mechanisms were used more extensively by some visionary companies. Treat the concept as a useful way to frame a long-range aim, not as a guaranteed route to financial success.
