Its order book now includes Airbus narrowbodies and widebodies and Boeing 787s, but the announced deliveries stretch into the next decade and remain subject to delays.
Why is Delta buying new planes?
Delta describes its fleet plan as both replacement and improvement. Its 2025 Form 10-K says newer aircraft with better fuel efficiency, more premium seating and greater cargo capacity are replacing retiring aircraft. Delta is also modifying cabins on existing planes to increase premium offerings and make interiors more consistent.
The airline says a fleet with different sizes and capabilities gives it flexibility to match aircraft to its network. That means the strategy is not simply to buy one model and replace every older aircraft with it: narrowbodies and widebodies serve different routes, while cabin changes can upgrade service before an aircraft is replaced.
More premium seating and lower operating costs
Delta presents fleet renewal as an investment in customer experience, operating economics and fuel efficiency. For example, in its announcement about exercising A321neo options, Delta called the A321neo the lowest-unit-cost narrowbody in its fleet and said it is 20–30% more fuel efficient than the current-generation aircraft it replaces. Delta also said the type has more Delta First and Delta Comfort seats than any other Delta narrowbody. These are Delta’s own claims, not independent comparative findings.

What aircraft has Delta ordered?
Delta’s order book spans multiple aircraft families and delivery horizons. At December 31, 2025, its 10-K disclosed 256 purchase commitments. Subsequent announcements in January and February 2026 added widebodies and more A321neos.

The year-end commitment counts and schedule are from Delta’s 2025 Form 10-K. The additional A321neos are detailed in Delta’s A321neo announcement; the widebody orders and schedules appear in its Airbus widebody announcement and Boeing 787 announcement. Delta’s year-end schedule listed 48 deliveries in 2026, 95 in 2027, 67 in 2028 and 46 after 2028 for the 256 commitments then disclosed.

Is Delta replacing older aircraft?
Yes, but the available disclosures do not provide a complete model-by-model retirement timetable. Delta says new deliveries will replace retiring aircraft, but it has not established in the cited sources that a particular older type will leave the fleet by a specific year.
The year-end 2025 fleet illustrates why renewal is a continuing process: Delta reported average ages of 2.7 years for its A220-300s and 2.0 years for its A321neos, compared with 29.0 years for A320-200s and 24.3 years for Boeing 717-200s. Those averages show variation across types; they do not, by themselves, identify retirement dates.

How large is Delta’s fleet?
Delta reported 1,314 aircraft as of December 31, 2025, including 989 mainline aircraft and 325 regional aircraft, in its 2025 Form 10-K. Regional flying was performed by Endeavor Air, SkyWest Airlines and Republic Airways; Delta notes that ownership differs across the regional fleet. The total is a dated year-end snapshot, not a count of aircraft all owned by Delta.
When will Delta receive the new aircraft?
Delta’s announced schedules spread arrivals over several years. The additional A321neos and Airbus widebodies are scheduled to start arriving in 2029; 787-10 deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2031. Those dates are plans, not guaranteed delivery dates. Delta’s 10-K warns that contractual timing can shift because of supply-chain, manufacturing and regulatory constraints.

That schedule risk matters to the strategy: delayed deliveries can postpone both replacement of older aircraft and the operating or customer benefits Delta expects from newer models. The 2025 filing also said Delta expected approximately $5.5 billion in 2026 capital spending, primarily for aircraft, advance deposits, fleet modifications and technology enhancements.

Delta reported a 6.4% fleet-wide fuel-efficiency improvement in 2025, below its 10% target, and said industry supply-chain delivery delays contributed to missing that milestone. The company also said the 38 next-generation aircraft it received in 2025 averaged 27% greater fuel efficiency per seat mile than the aircraft retired since 2019. Both figures are Delta-reported results, not independently verified comparisons. Delta’s 2025 sustainability reporting provides the company’s account.

What the strategy means for Delta’s fleet
Delta is pursuing several goals at once: replace aging aircraft, improve cabin consistency and premium seating, and add aircraft suited to domestic and long-haul growth. The varied orders are consistent with that approach, but the new types also mean the plan is not a simple fleet-wide swap. How quickly the benefits arrive depends in part on whether manufacturers can meet delivery schedules.
