The email-driven discount boom that took off around 2008 contracted as competitors multiplied, merchants listed offers across several platforms, and the model expanded beyond a single deal sent each day. Groupon remains, but it now describes itself as a broader marketplace for local services, goods, travel and digital coupons—not simply a daily email deal site.
How the daily-deal boom worked
Daily-deal platforms brought local businesses—often restaurants, spas and other service providers—to consumers with discounted, time-limited offers. Customers could discover a business at a lower price; merchants could reach a platform’s audience and attract visits. Harvard Business School researchers date the emergence of the format to around 2008. As the sites grew, their catalogs moved beyond the literal idea of one deal per day.
Groupon and LivingSocial became the leading U.S. names. A 2017 Harvard Business School paper, citing Statista’s market estimate, reported that Groupon had 59.1% of U.S. daily-deal market revenue in 2013 and LivingSocial had 16.6%. Those are historical estimates, not current market shares. Google Offers and Amazon Local were among the other entrants, alongside smaller and regional services.
Why the original model lost ground
There was no single event that ended the category, and the available evidence does not establish one cause for every site’s decline. Several pressures help explain why the original daily-deal format became less prominent.

Competition diluted the novelty
The leading sites’ success drew more companies into the market, including local aggregators and large technology firms experimenting with deals. A discount email was no longer a rare way to find a local offer, and the platforms had to compete for both consumers and merchants.
Merchants used multiple platforms
Merchants were not necessarily exclusive to one deal site. A 2020 Harvard Business School study of 82 cities, 160,876 merchants and 618,258 deal offerings found that 75% of merchants had offered deals on sites other than Groupon or LivingSocial. The study sample’s offers were 44% on Groupon, 13% on LivingSocial and 43% on other sites. These figures describe that study’s sample, not the present-day market; the merchant percentages overlap because businesses could use multiple platforms. The business grew beyond the daily email
The format broadened into larger offer catalogs and other categories. Groupon, for example, expanded beyond local deals into Goods and Travel and added digital coupons that can generate retailer commissions. That evolution made the service less dependent on the original one-off, time-limited email pitch, but it also meant the company was no longer just a daily-deal site.
The pandemic added a severe shock
COVID-19 disrupted local services and consumer activity. Groupon’s fiscal 2021 filing described pandemic-related changes in consumer behavior and effects on merchants, including lower demand, fewer active customers and redemptions, and elevated refunds. It was a major additional blow to a business connected to in-person local spending, not a sufficient explanation for the earlier changes in the industry. Groupon’s fiscal 2021 Form 10-K.

What happened to Groupon and LivingSocial?
Groupon survived by operating as a broader marketplace. In its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed March 10, 2026, the company calls itself “a global scaled two-sided marketplace that connects consumers to merchants.” It describes Local, Goods and Travel businesses, accessed through its apps and websites, and says revenue primarily comes from commissions on third-party goods and services; it also earns commissions from digital-coupon purchases. The company emphasizes a hyperlocal strategy for Local, while de-emphasizing Goods. Groupon’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.
The filing shows that the business’s performance varied by region and category in fiscal 2025: North American Local gross billings and units increased year over year, while International total gross billings and units declined. Groupon attributed part of the International Local decline to the Giftcloud divestiture and its exit from Italy in mid-2024; excluding those items, it reported growth in International Local gross billings. These are company-reported results for Groupon, not a measure of the whole daily-deal industry.

LivingSocial no longer occupies the position it held in the early U.S. market. The available sources establish its historical role but do not provide a complete, reliable chronology of every smaller site’s closure, acquisition or pivot. It would be inaccurate to turn the story into a claim that all daily-deal sites shut down.

The scale and channels have changed since the boom. In a dataset analyzed by Harvard Business School, Groupon had approximately 129,000 deals in 2012, with an average deal price of $59.30 and average sales of 244.2 per deal. LivingSocial had approximately 69,000 deals, an average deal price of $48.30 and average sales of 274.5 per deal. These are figures from the paper’s 2012 deal dataset, not current activity or a direct measure of profitability. Harvard Business School, “Bargaining and Competition in the Daily Deal Market” (2017).

Groupon reported that 80% of its global transactions were completed on mobile devices in 2024. That company-reported figure illustrates how the surviving marketplace has become mobile-led; it is not a current statistic for every deal platform. In its fiscal 2025 filing, Groupon also identified competition from marketplaces and vertical specialists with larger customer bases and resources, and said increased marketing spend was accompanied by strength in paid channels and headwinds in non-paid channels. Those disclosures describe current pressures for Groupon, not a proven explanation for every site that faded.
What this means if you are looking for a deal
Today’s surviving offers are better understood as part of broader local marketplaces and coupon services than as a revival of the original daily-email model. A discount alone does not tell you whether an offer is worthwhile. Before buying, check:
- The merchant and service: Confirm the business offers the specific experience, location and quality you want.
- Restrictions: Read expiration dates, blackout periods, booking requirements, party-size limits, eligible days and any extra charges.
- Redemption: Check how to book and redeem the offer, and whether the merchant must confirm availability before purchase.
- Real value: Compare the deal price with the merchant’s usual price and with alternatives; consider whether you would use the service without the discount.
- Repeat use: A deep introductory discount may not reflect what a repeat visit will cost.
The important shift is not that discounting disappeared, but that it became one feature within wider marketplaces and coupon systems. The evidence supports a history of contraction and adaptation, not a single shutdown date or a universal fate for every site.
