Wattpad Premium is a paid subscription that removes ads from reading on Wattpad, which is the main thing a fanfic reader gains from paying. It is not new: Wattpad says it has offered Premium since 2017. In Apple’s US App Store listing, Premium is $5.99 a month and Premium+ is $9.99 a month. Those are US prices and will differ in your country. For most casual fanfic readers, the subscription is worth it only if ads are the thing actually breaking your reading, because Premium does not change which stories are free and Premium+ adds features aimed at Wattpad Originals rather than fanfic.
Premium is not new, and the 2017 numbers are history
Headlines about a “new premium tier” for Wattpad usually trace back to iMore’s coverage of the original launch. That reporting described Premium at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Wattpad’s own description of the product is more direct: “Since 2017, we’ve offered Wattpad Premium, an ad-free subscription option for readers who prefer to immerse themselves in their favorite stories without interruption.”

In the 2017 coverage, Wattpad CEO Allen Lau said, “An ad-free option has been one of the most requested features from our users,” and framed Premium as a way to keep Wattpad free for everyone else. The $59.99 annual figure is useful only as a historical reference. Current prices are the ones shown in the app store or in your Wattpad account at checkout.
What the subscription removes, and what it does not
Three different things often get lumped together on Wattpad. Keeping them separate is the difference between paying for the right benefit and paying for a feature you will not use.

Premium’s core benefit is ad-free reading. Wattpad describes it as uninterrupted, ad-free reading, and that is the claim the subscription is built around. It applies to the reading experience. It does not make every story free, and it is not a guarantee that every piece of content on the platform is unlocked.
Free readers will still see ads. Some users describe ways to skip them in the free app, but those reports are anecdotal and not a dependable substitute for a subscription. A recent r/Wattpad post put the frustration bluntly: “those ads just ruin the whole experience.” That is one reader’s view, not a measure of how common the problem is, so treat it as a sign of what drives people to pay, not as proof of how many people do.
Paywalled Wattpad Originals chapters
Wattpad Originals are the platform’s own serialized stories, and they use a different paywall. In Wattpad’s Originals announcement, dated October 3 (the page shows month and day only; the 2023 year is corroborated by contemporaneous coverage), Wattpad said most Originals add a free chapter each week, while the ten newest chapters sit behind the paywall. Readers can unlock those chapters early with Coins or with Premium+, or wait for them to become free. The same announcement says a portion of completed Originals stays free.
Wattpad’s announcements describe this chapter timing only for Originals. They do not describe a paywall on user-posted fanfiction, so if your reading is mostly fanfic, the ad removal is the part of the subscription that matters most. Wattpad’s platform terms can change, and the current paywall rules should be checked on the Originals page before you pay for early access.

Other features listed with the subscription
Wattpad’s subscription feature announcement also lists offline stories, coin-purchase bonuses, profile colors, and reaction stickers. The announcement does not split these cleanly by tier in the sources available, so do not assume that Premium and Premium+ offer identical extras. Offline reading is the one of these that changes how you use the app, and it is worth confirming on your own device before you rely on it.

The Premium Picks and Premium+ extras were announced in late 2023 (the announcement page is dated November 17, with the year corroborated by contemporaneous coverage). Wattpad says perks can change, so the live terms in the app are the ones that count.

The math is simple, and the decision is mostly about how much ads cost you in attention. At the US listing price, Premium costs about $72 a year before tax, and Premium+ costs about $120. Those figures are arithmetic on the monthly prices, not a discount or promotion.

- Consider Premium if ads interrupt your reading often enough that you would pay to stop them, and you read on Wattpad every week.
- Consider Premium+ only if you already read Wattpad Originals heavily and want early chapters or the two extra chosen titles more than the price difference.
- Skip both if you read occasionally, do not mind ads, or mostly read content that is free anyway. Paying for an ad-free experience you use twice a month rarely pays off.
- Check first if you mainly want offline reading. The announcement lists it, but the tier split is not stated, so confirm it on your device before subscribing.
How to check the price where you live
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and search for Wattpad.
- On the app page, look at the in-app purchase options. In Apple’s US listing these include $5.99 monthly Premium and $9.99 monthly Premium+.
- Note the price in your own currency. Prices vary by country, and taxes are added separately, so the US figures above are a reference point only.
- Read the renewal terms shown at purchase and confirm which tier you are buying before you tap to subscribe.
If you decide not to pay
You can still read free on Wattpad. Free reading keeps the ad load, Originals chapters follow the weekly-free schedule, and you can wait for paywalled chapters to become free. If ads are the only issue, a short trial of the subscription, where offered in your region, lets you test whether the ad-free experience is worth the monthly cost before you commit to a full year.
Keep a simple record for a month: count how many times ads interrupted a session you cared about. If the number is small, the subscription is an expensive way to fix a minor annoyance.
