There is no single booking date that reliably gets every traveler the lowest fare. The shared advice from travel experts is to plan ahead, stay flexible where possible, and watch prices—then use route- and season-specific signals rather than treating one rule of thumb as universal. For U.S.-origin trips, Google’s 2026 analysis puts the historical domestic low near 39 days before departure; for international trips, its average low is around 89 days out, but prices across a broad period of 50 to 133 days before departure do not meaningfully differ.
What travel experts actually agree on
The experts do not give one identical booking window for every flight. Their common ground is more practical: start planning early, monitor fares, and remain flexible about dates or routes when you can. In a Travel + Leisure roundup updated May 22, 2026, representatives from Priceline, KAYAK, and Skyscanner offered different timing rules while emphasizing that the best window depends on the trip.
Christina Bennett, Priceline’s consumer travel expert, recommends booking domestic or North American vacations between two weeks and two months ahead, and international travel at least 90 days ahead. KAYAK’s Kayla Inserra DeLoache notes that the best time to book New York to London may differ from Los Angeles to London. These are expert rules of thumb, not guarantees for a particular fare.
When to book domestic and international flights
Google’s October 2026 analysis uses five years of aggregated Google Flights data to estimate historical booking patterns for U.S. departures. It is an average across common trip scenarios, not a prediction that a specific route will hit its lowest fare on a particular day.

| Trip type | Historical average low | Low-price range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic flights | 39 days before departure | 22–57 days before departure | Use roughly one to two months ahead as a starting point, then check your route’s price trend. |
| International flights | 89 days before departure | 50–133 days before departure | Start monitoring early; Google says the average price drop across this wide range is insignificant, so it advises booking as early as possible. |
The international average low does not mean waiting until exactly 89 days is best. Because Google describes little meaningful price difference across the broader low-price range, there is no strong evidence in these averages that waiting for that specific date will pay off. Bennett’s at-least-90-days guideline broadly supports planning early, while route-specific differences remain important.
Adjust the timing for holidays and destinations
Seasonal trips can differ from the general domestic average. Google’s 2026 U.S.-departure estimates give these historical averages and low-price ranges:

| Trip scenario | Historical average low | Low-price range |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | 34 days before departure | 21–57 days before departure |
| Christmas | 56 days before departure | 33–67 days before departure |
| Spring break | 50 days before departure | 29–64 days before departure |
| Summer | 21 days before departure | 20–47 days before departure |
| Europe | 90 days before departure | 49 or more days before departure |
| Mexico or the Caribbean | 43 days before departure | 24–69 days before departure |
These are averages, not promises for every destination or departure city. The same Travel + Leisure roundup also quotes Skyscanner’s Laura Lindsay saying Thanksgiving can be a good time to find international deals because many travelers choose domestic trips during the holiday season; that observation should not be taken as a guarantee for any particular route.
Does the day you buy matter more than the day you fly?
In Google’s 2026 comparison, Wednesday was the cheapest day to book, but it was only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday. The day of travel showed a larger association with price: flying Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday was associated with about 14% savings compared with weekend flights. For domestic Sunday-to-Sunday trips, shifting the trip dates could mean savings of up to 20%. These are reported comparisons in Google’s analysis, not savings guaranteed for an individual itinerary.

If your schedule allows, compare different departure and return dates before focusing on which weekday to purchase. A fare alert can help you monitor a fixed itinerary, but it cannot guarantee that a price will fall. Google says its route insight compares current prices with prior years; treat that historical signal as context rather than a forecast.
How to apply the advice to your trip
- Fix the trip details you cannot change. Enter your origin, destination, and approximate travel dates, then compare the current fare with route-specific historical price information where available.
- Set a price alert. Use an available flight-search alert for your route so you can track changes instead of relying on memory or checking at random. An alert reports price movement; it does not promise a lower fare.
- For a U.S. domestic trip, start comparing around one to two months out. Google’s 2026 low-price range is 22–57 days before departure, while Priceline’s Bennett gives two weeks to two months as a rule of thumb. Use these as a planning window, not a deadline.
- For international travel, start early and keep checking. Google’s current average low is 89 days out, and Bennett recommends at least 90 days. Because the broad 50–133-day low-price range shows no meaningful average drop, avoid holding off solely to reach one exact day.
- Compare flexible travel dates. If the schedule permits, test different departure and return days; the reported differences for travel days are larger than the small booking-weekday difference in Google’s comparison.
- Weigh nonstop convenience against connecting fares. Google found nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average than connecting flights in its 2026 analysis. Compare the actual itineraries and decide whether the lower fare is worth the extra time and connection risk; the analysis does not assign a value to those trade-offs.
Why older booking rules may give different numbers
Booking windows change with the data period and trip definitions. Google’s 2022 analysis reported domestic lows 21–60 days ahead, with a 44-day average low. Its 2025 post put the domestic low at 39 days and international fares at their lowest 49 or more days ahead. The 2026 estimates retain a 39-day domestic average but place the international average low at 89 days, while still describing the broad international low-price range as insignificant. Use the 2026 figures as the current Google estimates, not as a timeless rule that overrides current route prices.

The earlier figures come from Google’s 2025 travel analysis and 2022 flight-deal analysis. Google’s 2025 post specified average round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021 through August 1, 2025, for trips lasting four to 16 days and departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets; that method should not be conflated with the newer 2026 estimates.

The Google figures describe U.S.-departure historical averages. They do not establish the best booking date for every origin country, route, airline, fare class, or traveler’s needs, and they cannot identify the lowest future price with certainty. Expert guidance also varies by destination and route. For a fixed trip, use the averages to decide when to begin watching, then make the booking decision using the fare and schedule available for your itinerary.
