Yes. Volkswagen sells a power increase for certain ID.3 Pro and Pro S cars after purchase. It raises output from 150 kW (203 PS) to 170 kW (231 PS) through software, not a hardware change. When Auto Express reported the UK terms on 14 August 2025, the choice was £16.50 a month after one free month, or £649 once, with the one-time activation staying with the car when it is sold. Those were the prices reported on that date. More than a year later they may have changed, so confirm the current figure in the car’s in-car shop before deciding.
What the upgrade actually changes
The headline framing suggests a car held back from its real performance. The more accurate picture is a base output that Volkswagen offers in standard form, with a higher output available as an add-on. Volkswagen’s Pro S launch material says that in Germany the Pro S came with 170 kW as standard, while customers in other markets could choose to raise the basic 150 kW to 170 kW after purchase. Availability therefore depends on market, not only on model.
| Measure | Standard output | After the upgrade | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 150 kW (203 PS) | 170 kW (231 PS) | Volkswagen Newsroom, 2024 ID.3 Pro release |
| Torque | 265 Nm | 310 Nm | Auto Express, 14 August 2025, reporting Volkswagen’s upgrade details |
| 0 to 100 km/h | Not stated in the 2024 Pro material | 6.6 seconds in the configuration Volkswagen described | Volkswagen Newsroom, 2024 ID.3 Pro release |
| Range | Not stated as a change | Volkswagen’s position is that range is unaffected | Auto Express, 14 August 2025; attributed manufacturer position, not an independent test |
Auto Express also reported a 27 bhp increase. The 59 kWh battery and up to 434 km combined WLTP range in Volkswagen’s 2024 release apply to that Pro configuration only. Do not carry those figures over to other ID.3 versions or model years. No independent test of acceleration or range attributable to an owner’s activation has been published in the sources available, so the figures above are manufacturer or publication claims.

| Option | Upfront | Ongoing | What the report says about it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | First month free | £16.50 a month after the trial | The report did not say how the monthly plan is handled if the car is sold. |
| One-time | £649 once | None | The one-time activation stays with the car on resale. |
On those reported prices, the monthly route passes the one-time price at the 40th paid month: 39 payments total £643.50, and 40 payments total £660. If you expect to keep the car for longer than that, the one-time option costs less. If you expect to sell within three years, the monthly plan keeps your outlay low, provided you can stop paying when you sell.

- Market. Volkswagen said availability differed by market. Germany’s Pro S was sold at 170 kW as standard, so the upgrade question does not arise there in the same way. The UK offer is the one Auto Express reported, and it may not match other countries.
- Naming. Volkswagen’s 2026 ID.3 Neo equipment announcement replaces the Pure, Pro and Pro S names with Trend, Life and Style. It also lists steering-wheel heating as an on-demand function on Neo Trend. That is a separate feature set from the power upgrade, so check the exact trim and model year rather than relying on the older names.
Why Volkswagen sells it this way
A Volkswagen spokesperson, quoted by Auto Express, said: “Offering more power to customers is nothing new – historically many petrol and diesel vehicles have been offered with engines of the same size, but with the possibility of choosing one with more potency.”
The same statement said that buyers who want a sportier drive can add it “within the life of the vehicle, rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price.” It also said the configurator shows the base output with the option made clear to customers. The argument is that buyers can defer the cost of the higher-output car rather than pay for it at purchase.

Other things it does not do
The power upgrade is a digital function. It is not an aftermarket part, and no physical component is needed to activate it. Volkswagen UK’s current ID.3 page describes other post-purchase upgrades delivered through We Connect, including navigation and smart air conditioning. It also lists an Ohme home-charger offer for qualifying new ID.3 orders. That charger is a separate ownership purchase for charging at home and does not add power to the car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Before you pay: a checklist
- Confirm the exact model, trim and model year. The 2026 names differ from the 2024 and 2025 Pro and Pro S names.
- Open the in-car shop for that specific car and check the displayed price. Do not rely on the August 2025 figures.
- Ask the dealer or Volkswagen whether a monthly plan transfers to a new owner, since the reported terms do not say.
- If buying used, confirm whether the upgrade is already active and whether the one-time activation is included in the sale.
- Compare the total cost with the price difference between the standard and higher-output versions, if your dealer quotes one.
For most buyers the real choice is about time horizon and cash flow. The one-time payment suits owners who plan to keep the car for several years, and the monthly plan suits those who want the higher output without a large upfront charge and expect to sell within a few years. Either way, confirm the terms that apply to your car on the day you buy.
