During the window, self-service booking tools were reported unavailable, while flights were reported to operate normally and airport check-in stayed open. The reporting does not show that the cancellation record was compromised by a failure. The word “superb” in the headline is an editorial characterization, and the available reporting does not establish a consistent comparative dataset that would prove it.
What United changed, and when
The Independent reported that the upgrade ran from 1:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. Central on February 4, 2026. According to that report, the work moved the systems behind United’s booking platform, which it called “Shares,” from an older data center in North Carolina to a newer facility in Chicago. The stated aim was reliability. These details come from The Independent’s reporting. A primary United technical announcement is not cited in the coverage available, so treat the description of the migration as reported rather than confirmed by the airline.
AOL gave a narrower window of about 1:55 a.m. to 4 a.m. Central, attributed to a United notice, and said the airline had already pre-canceled most flights departing during that period. The two outlets published different times. If you cite the window, attribute it to the outlet you are quoting.
What passengers could and could not do
The Independent listed the functions that were reported unavailable during the window and the ones that continued. The table below reflects that reporting.

In practical terms, a passenger who needed to change a reservation or print a boarding pass during those hours could not do it in the app or online. Someone who arrived at the airport could still check in at the counter.
Did the upgrade cause cancellations?
This is the question readers most need answered precisely. AOL reported that most departures scheduled during the window had been pre-canceled. That describes a planned schedule adjustment made around a known maintenance period. It does not, on its own, show that the upgrade triggered a wider wave of operational failures.

- Was there a published window beforehand? For this event, yes. The Independent and AOL both described a scheduled period in advance.
- Were departures cancelled ahead of time or on the day? AOL reported pre-cancellation of most departures inside the window.
- Did disruption spread beyond the window? The reporting reviewed does not show cancellations outside the announced hours that were attributed to the upgrade.
An unplanned failure would fail at least one of these tests. Nothing in the coverage describes that pattern for this event.

AOL cited selected daily counts attributed to FlightAware. They are the only specific figures in the coverage, and they are snapshots rather than a season-long measure:
- 37 United cancellations on the Sunday before the window.
- 6 cancellations and 250 delays on February 3, 2026.
- 4 cancellations and 23 delays early on February 4, 2026.
These counts are not a verified season-wide or competitor-adjusted performance measure. The coverage does not include the underlying FlightAware data, a consistent comparison period, or a definition of what would make a record “superb.” If you repeat these numbers, give the date, the source (AOL citing FlightAware), and the fact that they are selected daily snapshots.

Why “superb” is an opinion, not a ranking
Comparing one airline’s cancellations with another’s requires a method that the available reporting does not supply. A fair comparison would need to:
- Use the same dates and geographic scope for every carrier.
- Use the same data source and the same definition of a cancellation.
- Normalize for each airline’s number of scheduled flights.
- Separate weather and other external disruptions from planned schedule changes such as this one.
Without those controls, a headline adjective cannot be turned into a statistical claim. United’s cancellations around the upgrade may have been comparatively low in the snapshots AOL cited, but that is a narrower statement than a superior long-term record.

The Independent quoted Scott Keyes, founder and CEO of Going.com: “Don’t freak out if you can’t search for flights in the middle of the night.” The same article also included the line “It will come back online soon,” which it attributed to Keyes.

The Independent also advised travelers to finish any changes before the work began and to download, screenshot, or print boarding passes in advance. That is historical guidance for a February 2026 event. If you are reading this later and face a similar planned window, use the same steps as a checklist and confirm the current status with your airline:
- Check the published maintenance window and whether your departure falls inside it.
- Make seat, time, or routing changes before the window opens.
- Save your boarding pass offline, or print it, before the window opens.
- Plan to check in at the airport counter if online check-in is unavailable.
- Check your flight status again on the day of travel, since a pre-cancellation is a schedule change you should confirm.
The February 2026 upgrade is a useful example of how a planned technology change differs from a failure. It was scheduled, bounded, and reported in advance. The cancellation counts that accompany it are limited snapshots, and they do not establish a superior cancellation record on their own.
