If an online gift card is declined, first identify its type and issuer, then check the available balance and re-enter the payment details. For a Visa gift card, online checkout calls for the 16-digit card number, expiration date, and CVV. If the balance appears sufficient but the card still fails, contact the issuer using the number on the card. Other gift cards may follow different rules.
Work through these checks in order

Identify the card and issuer
Check the physical card or digital delivery message for the card brand, issuer, official balance-check channel, and terms. A store-specific gift card does not necessarily work like a Visa gift card, so use the instructions for your particular card.

Check the available balance
Use the issuer’s official website or the phone number printed on the card. For a Visa gift card, Visa says the funds should cover the online purchase amount. Compare the available balance with the full order total, including any charges shown at checkout.
Visa’s gift-card guidance says federal law requires gift-card funds to remain valid for at least five years, and that state law may provide more time. That minimum does not guarantee that a particular purchase will be approved; check your card’s terms and available balance with its issuer.

Enter the card details carefully
For a Visa gift card, enter the 16-digit card number, expiration date, and CVV in the corresponding checkout fields. Follow any address or registration instructions from the issuer. There is no single billing-address rule established for all gift cards, so do not assume that one card’s setup applies to another.

Consider holds or merchant restrictions
A decline does not necessarily mean the card is defective. Visa notes that hotels and car-rental merchants often require a credit card and may place a hold that makes some gift-card funds unavailable for a time. Gas-station and restaurant transactions may also involve additional steps. Check the merchant’s payment rules as well as the card balance.

Contact the issuer if a Visa card still declines
If a Visa gift card appears to have enough funds but is declined, Visa advises contacting the issuer at the toll-free number on the back of the card. Have the card, purchase receipt, and checkout error details available. For another type of gift card, use the contact method listed by its issuer.
Protect the card if you suspect fraud
Do not give a gift-card number or PIN to someone demanding payment. The FTC warns that scammers use gift cards as a way to collect money. If you think someone has tampered with the card or obtained its details, contact the gift-card company promptly, ask whether the funds can be recovered, and keep the card and purchase receipt. You can also report the scam to the FTC.
