Ubisoft announced the closure of its Halifax studio on January 7, 2026, three weeks after the Nova Scotia Labour Board certified the workers’ union on December 18, 2025. The timing drew scrutiny from CWA Canada, but the available public statements do not establish that unionization caused the closure—or when Ubisoft made the specific decision.
What happened, and when?
The public timeline places union organizing, certification and the closure announcement within seven months. The sequence is documented; the reason for the closure is not settled by that sequence alone.
- June 18, 2025: Ubisoft Halifax workers filed to unionize with CWA Canada. The union said a majority of nearly 60 employees had signed cards. The proposed bargaining unit covered producers, programmers, designers, artists, researchers and development testers. CWA Canada’s filing announcement published the workers’ statement: “We are unionizing not in opposition to Ubisoft, but in partnership, with the goal of ensuring our studio remains a beacon of equity, excellence, and innovation.”
- December 18, 2025: The Nova Scotia Labour Board certified the bargaining unit after 74% of staff voted yes, according to CWA Canada. The unit was described as comprising about 60 workers. The union’s certification announcement reported the result.
- January 7, 2026: Ubisoft announced it would close its Halifax operation. That was three weeks after certification. CWA Canada said it would seek information about the decision, while expressly cautioning against treating unionization as an established cause.
- January 21, 2026: Ubisoft’s corporate restructuring announcement included the Halifax mobile studio closure among broader studio-footprint changes and said the company was accelerating cost reductions.
- January 13, 2026: CWA Canada Local 30111’s chronology records that it initiated proceedings before the Nova Scotia Labour Board concerning the closure.
- April 14, 2026: CWA Canada reported that workers approved a negotiated settlement. Its announcement said 71 employees were affected, including 61 union members; the compensation terms were confidential.
Did Ubisoft close Halifax because workers unionized?
The available sources do not establish that. CWA Canada questioned the timing and said it would demand information, but its January 7 statement explicitly stopped short of alleging that unionization caused the shutdown: “While we are not saying that this is what happened here, we will be demanding information from Ubisoft about the reason for the sudden decision to close.” The union’s president, Carmel Smyth, also said: “We will pursue every legal recourse to ensure that the rights of these workers are respected and not infringed in any way.” CWA Canada’s response documents its position.
Ubisoft’s January corporate announcement supplies a broader business context, not proof of the specific decision’s timing or motive. It described actions “to streamline operations and adapt to evolving market conditions,” including the Halifax mobile studio closure earlier that month, the Stockholm studio closure and restructurings at Abu Dhabi, RedLynx and Massive. The announcement does not say when the Halifax closure decision was made or explain why that studio was selected. Ubisoft’s restructuring announcement is the company’s stated rationale at the broader program level.

A former employee, Jon Huffman, told CWA Canada the closure surprised staff and front-line managers, saying they were “in the middle of many on-going and new projects, and doing great work.” That account describes employees’ experience; it does not independently establish the company’s motive.
How many employees lost their jobs?
CWA Canada’s April 14 settlement announcement reported 71 affected employees, including 61 union members. That later workforce figure is distinct from the earlier descriptions of a bargaining unit of about 60 workers and nearly 60 staff during the organizing drive. Those figures refer to different counts and points in time, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. The union reported that the settlement was approved, but did not disclose its compensation terms. CWA Canada’s settlement announcement provides those details.

What is known about the labor-board proceedings?
The union’s chronology records proceedings initiated on January 13, 2026, concerning the closure. The sources cited here do not report a final Labour Board finding on whether the closure was connected to union activity. Nor does the settlement announcement disclose terms or say that a decision on the merits was issued. The CWA Canada Local 30111 timeline records the union’s account of the proceedings.
The firm conclusions are therefore limited: certification preceded the closure announcement by three weeks; Ubisoft placed the closure within a broader cost-reduction and studio-footprint program; and the union challenged the timing and sought information. The public record cited here does not resolve the specific decision’s date or establish its motive.
