Uber’s stated reason for the work is that riders who experience an electric car may later buy one. That reason is the company’s view, not a demonstrated result, and the programs that matter to a driver’s budget are the ones open today, with their own eligibility rules.
What the Tesla partnership actually included
Uber described its Tesla arrangement in its first-quarter 2024 results, released May 8, 2024, under original equipment manufacturer agreements. The disclosed work had two parts:
- Charging-demand data. Uber began sharing information intended to help identify where drivers need charging infrastructure most.
- Purchase incentives for US drivers. Uber offered incentives to US drivers buying certain Tesla vehicles.
The disclosure does not give complete incentive amounts, the list of eligible models, or how long the arrangement will run. Older promotional posts or past terms should not be treated as the current offer. For the company’s own wording, see Uber’s Q1 2024 results.
The Tesla work was also not Uber’s only vehicle collaboration. Uber’s 2026 Governance Strategy and Engagement Report says Uber introduced a Tesla collaboration in France in 2025, while also expanding partnerships with Kia and TrueCar and adding collaborations with General Motors in Brazil, Nissan in the United States, and OneCarNow in Mexico.

Why Uber believes rides can popularize EVs
At the 2023 Aspen Ideas Festival, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described Uber as a messenger for electric vehicles. Axios reported on June 30, 2023 that he argued a good experience as a passenger could shape a rider’s next car choice. In the interview, he said:
“When you experience an EV as a passenger, the experience tends to be a really good experience because the cars that are out there right now … are awesome vehicles.”
The quote is from Khosrowshahi, interviewed by Savannah Sellers of NBC; the wording is as reproduced by Axios. It explains the logic behind the program, but it is a stated expectation. No published figure in the sources reviewed measures how many riders bought an EV after riding in one.

The options a driver can use today
Uber’s current US driver pages list several practical routes. They work differently, and each has its own eligibility, geography, and status. Program figures and terms change, so check the live pages before you plan a purchase or a rental.

Tesla Model 3 rentals through Hertz
Uber’s Comfort Electric page says nearly 50,000 drivers have rented a Tesla through the program, completing more than 24 million fully electric trips and more than 260 million electric miles. These are Uber’s own cumulative program figures, shown on the live page as accessed October 8, 2026. The page does not give a separate publication date, and it does not break those figures down by year or city.
For a driver, this route tests an EV without buying one. The cost trade-off is that a weekly rental carries no equity, so the decision depends on whether your weekly ride hours justify the rental rate, which the sources do not state.

Purchase offers: TrueCar and Kia
Uber’s current EV page lists up to $1,000 off an EV purchased through TrueCar and up to $1,500 off select new Kia EV models. Both discounts are on the purchase price, so they reduce the upfront cost but still leave a loan or lease to arrange. Read the terms for model, trim, and region before you assume the discount applies to the vehicle you want.
Go Electric grants
Uber reports that in 2025 it launched Go Electric grants in select Canadian cities at CAD$5,000 and in US cities at $4,000. It later expanded the offering nationwide across the United States in 2026. The grant is not a flat amount for every driver; the sources show that the pages describe eligible locations and driver tiers differently. Confirm your eligibility in the app or on the live driver page before you count a grant in your budget. Current applications are temporarily paused for drivers outside New York City and Massachusetts.

Uber’s EV page lists EVgo discounts of up to 45% for eligible Uber Pro Gold, Platinum, and Diamond drivers. The same page describes public charging tools, including maps that show availability and connector types. Because the discount depends on your Uber Pro tier, a driver who is not at a qualifying tier should cost charging from ordinary EVgo rates and not from the headline percentage.

How the Tesla work fits the wider program
Uber’s 2026 governance report describes a broader set of EV tools, which it presents as company-reported reach rather than measured adoption:
- An EV charging map covering 20 countries.
- Connected-vehicle features, including battery-aware trip matching and a charging widget, expanded beyond Tesla to 28 EV manufacturers across Canada, Europe, and the United States.
- A goal of unlocking 1,000 or more new chargers in urban charging deserts through utilization guarantees to charging operators.
- Total global investment of $621 million in driver financial incentive programs through the end of 2025.
These are Uber’s figures, reported in its own governance document. They show scale and intent. They do not show how much any of these tools changed a driver’s decision to switch to an EV.

In July 2024 Uber and BYD announced a multi-year partnership with an objective of bringing 100,000 BYD electric vehicles onto Uber’s platform in key global markets, starting with Europe and Latin America. The companies said the work could include driver pricing and financing offers, charging discounts, and future autonomous-capable vehicles. The announcement, dated July 31, 2024, sets a target and an intended scope. It does not confirm that 100,000 vehicles are on the platform. Read the Uber and BYD announcement for the stated scope.

A personal-finance checklist before you commit
Use this sequence to decide whether any of these routes fits your situation. The sources do not provide a controlled comparison of lifetime operating costs across Tesla, BYD, rental, and ownership, so run your own numbers.
- Check whether you are in a market where the offer exists. Many Uber EV programs are US-specific or city-specific, and some are paused.
- Confirm your driver tier. EVgo discounts and some grant terms depend on it.
- Compare weekly rental against ownership. For a rental, compare the weekly cost with the fuel or charging you would otherwise pay. For a purchase, add the loan or lease, insurance, and the discount only if it applies to your exact vehicle.
- Estimate charging access where you drive. Use the charging maps in the Uber app, and factor in the time spent charging, because that is income you are not earning on the road.
- Get the live terms in writing before you sign. Program terms change, and the discount you saw in an advertisement may no longer apply.
Uber’s programs can lower the cost of trying or adopting an EV, but each route has its own conditions. The wider message in Uber’s materials is that rides can introduce passengers to EVs. Whether that changes anyone’s purchase is something Uber has not measured, so treat the offers as the concrete part and the persuasion as the unproven part.
