Theresa M. Claiborne retired from United Airlines on May 25, 2024, after 34 years with the carrier, ending her airline career as a Boeing 787 captain. Her biography and the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) both describe her as the first Black woman pilot in the U.S. Air Force, a milestone her biography dates to September 16, 1982.
The 34-year figure covers her United tenure only. Counted from her June 1981 Air Force commission to her 2024 retirement, her career spans just under 43 years, so “four decades” is a loose way to describe it. The sections below separate what her own biography reports, what the NAA reports, and what the public record does not yet confirm.
Who Theresa Claiborne is and what she retired from
Claiborne’s career moved in two stages. She first served in the Air Force, where she became a KC-135 aircraft commander and instructor, and then flew for United Airlines from 1990 until her retirement. Her biography reports more than 23,000 flight hours over that career. The NAA gave her its 2024 Katharine Wright Trophy, which recognizes a person’s contribution to others and to aviation and space flight over an extended period.

Her Air Force years
First Black woman qualified as an Air Force pilot
The NAA says Claiborne’s path began as an Air Force ROTC cadet, and that her early training included a T-37B familiarization flight at age 20. Both her biography and the NAA place her 1982 qualification as the service’s first for a Black woman. Neither source ties that claim to Air Force records, so it rests on the accounts of her and the NAA.

KC-135 aircraft commander and instructor
The NAA reports that she became the first Black woman qualified as a KC-135 pilot and as an Air Force flight instructor. Her biography adds that she served as a KC-135 aircraft commander and instructor. NAA President and CEO Amy Spowart said in the 2024 announcement that Claiborne “overcame racial and gender barriers” to start her career. The sources describe those barriers in general terms and do not list specific incidents, so this article does not add detail they do not provide.
Active duty and Reserve service
Her biography says she served seven years on active duty and 13 years in the Air Force Reserve. The NAA says she moved to the Reserve in 1988, two years before she joined United.

Her United Airlines career
From flight engineer to captain
Claiborne joined United as a flight officer and started on the flight deck as a flight engineer aboard a Boeing 727. Her biography says she later flew the Boeing 737, 747, 757, and 767, upgrading to captain on the 757 and 767 in 2018.
Boeing 787 captain
She moved to the Boeing 787 in 2021. The NAA calls her the first Black woman to earn captain status on the 787 Dreamliner. Her biography describes her as a 787 captain at retirement, and that is the title used in this article.

Retirement and what followed
Her retirement date of May 25, 2024 is given in both her biography and the NAA’s August 15, 2024 award announcement. Her biography says she continued working with United in a contracting role after leaving the flight deck, and that she served as President Emeritus of Sisters of the Skies. The biography lists the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame induction in 2025 among her honors. These are biography-page statements, and this article presents them that way.
The figures behind her story
More than 23,000 flight hours
The NAA’s August 15, 2024 announcement says Claiborne ended her commercial flying career with more than 23,000 hours, and her biography reports the same total. Both are self-reported in the sense that neither source describes an independent audit, so the figure should be attributed to them rather than presented as verified logbook data.

24 Black women pilots among more than 17,000 at United
Her biography says she was one of 24 Black women pilots among more than 17,000 pilots at United. The page gives no measurement date or method, so the count describes what her biography reports and not United’s current workforce.

In the NAA’s announcement, Claiborne reflected on becoming the first: “I didn’t know I was going to be the first until the end, and I’m glad because that’s a lot of pressure for a 23-year-old.”

The NAA also quotes Claiborne advising mentees: “Eyes on the prize. A dream is just a dream; make it a goal and achieve it!”
Recognition and Sisters of the Skies
The NAA says Claiborne helped found Sisters of the Skies in 2016 with other Black female pilots. It describes the nonprofit as a stepping stone for women of color who face barriers entering aviation. Readers interested in that work should check the organization’s current programs directly, since the sources reviewed here do not describe its present activities.
Quick Recap
What the public record does and does not establish
- Her final passenger flight. The sources do not describe the route or details of her last flight, and they do not reconcile that flight with the May 25, 2024 retirement date. This article therefore does not treat any specific flight as her last.
- The “first” claims. The first-woman claims appear in her biography and in the NAA’s 2024 announcement. They are not drawn from Air Force or airline records.
- The flight-hour total. More than 23,000 hours is a reported figure from her biography and the NAA, not an audited total.
- The 24-of-17,000 count. This figure is undated and comes only from her biography.
- Post-retirement role and honors. The contracting role, the President Emeritus title, and the 2025 Hall of Fame induction are stated on her biography page and are not independently documented in the sources reviewed here.
