In April 2025, reports said Social Security placed records for roughly 6,300 immigrants in its Death Master File, a move that can disrupt benefits and other services. But the available sources do not establish that all the people affected were Latino, how many lost benefits, or that the reported action was taken to cut them off. A separate 2026 whistleblower allegation about a proposed 2.7 million designations has not been verified as a completed action.
Did Social Security mark immigrants as dead?
April 2025 reporting and a letter from Senate Finance Committee members described Social Security Administration (SSA) records for thousands of immigrants being placed in the Death Master File (DMF). The committee letter, dated April 30, said reports concerned at least 6,300 people, including children and older adults. The Associated Press (AP) reported that an administration official put the number at roughly 6,300.
The headline’s description of the group as Latino is not substantiated by the cited reporting and oversight materials. Nor do those sources establish a final finding that SSA acted to cut off benefits. The senators characterized the reported action as unlawful, but that was their position—not a court ruling. AP reported an administration official’s explanation for the screening, while noting that the administration had not provided evidence for its asserted identification criteria.
How do SSA death records work?
SSA’s Numident is its master database for Social Security number assignments and associated identity records, and the agency’s official source of death information. SSA records deaths in the DMF and shares that file with federal agencies and outside entities that use it for identity matching and fraud prevention.

The Senate Finance letter described SSA’s ordinary process as running death reports through its Death Information Processing System and conducting verification checks before adding records to the DMF. That description is the committee’s account of SSA’s stated process. An SSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) audit later documented that erroneous death entries do occur.
How many immigrants were added to the Social Security Death Master File?
The April 2025 figure was about 6,300, but the two cited accounts phrase its basis differently. The Senate letter said “at least 6,300” based on reports it cited; AP attributed “roughly 6,300” to an administration official. Neither figure is presented as a completed SSA audit count. The administration had not publicly provided evidence for its asserted screening criteria, according to AP.

| 2.7 million | People in an alleged proposal to be designated deceased | Figure in a former SSA official’s declaration summarized in a June 2026 Senate letter; it is an allegation about a proposal, not a verified number of changed records. |
What happens if Social Security says you are deceased?
An erroneous death entry can interfere with services that depend on accurate SSA identity information. The 2025 reports and Senate letter described potential effects on Social Security benefits, the ability to work, healthcare, banking, credit, and other financial services. Those are possible consequences; the sources do not show that every person in the reported group experienced each one.
The available accounts do not provide a complete count of people who lost benefits or other services, or a case-by-case record of whether the 2025 entries were corrected. They therefore support concern about the consequences of an inaccurate entry, not a claim that a particular number of people definitively lost benefits.

Was a plan to mark 2.7 million people deceased carried out?
The 2.7 million figure comes from a separate allegation that surfaced in 2026, not from the April 2025 report about roughly 6,300 immigrants. In a declaration summarized in a June 2026 letter by Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren, former SSA official Jeremiah Schofield said that a proposal in May 2025 involved marking 2.7 million people deceased and that SSA staff resisted. The declaration also attributed an alleged motive to a Department of Homeland Security official. Schofield’s account is an allegation, not confirmation that the records were changed or that the alleged motive was established.
The senators’ June 2026 letter sought information from former Department of Government Efficiency staff and the SSA commissioner. A federal court opinion recounted a June 5 factual notice that brought the declaration to the court’s attention. That procedural history shows the allegation entered oversight and litigation records; it is not a final finding about whether the proposal was carried out or who was responsible.

What does SSA’s error audit show?
On July 2, 2026, SSA OIG published an audit summary reporting that SSA posted about 5.6 million death records in calendar year 2025. Of those, 12,504, or 0.22%, were later determined to be erroneous. These agency-wide figures provide context about mistakes in death records; they do not identify the cause of the 2025 immigrant designations or prove that those entries were either accidental or intentional.
The audit also reviewed corrected erroneous death entries recorded from January 2020 through December 2024. In the sample, technicians did not document the reason for 45% of erroneous postings that were later removed. OIG said stronger guidance and consistent documentation are needed for accountability and transparency. The finding concerns recordkeeping for the audit sample, not the April 2025 immigrant group.

What is established—and what is not
- April 2025 reports and a Senate Finance letter described roughly 6,300 immigrant records placed in the DMF.
- The available materials do not verify that all affected people were Latino, establish how many lost benefits, or show that every record was reversed.
- The 2.7 million figure refers to a former official’s allegation about a later proposal; the cited materials do not establish that those records were changed.
- The 2026 OIG audit documents erroneous death entries and gaps in correction documentation, but it does not resolve the cause or legality of the reported immigrant designations.
