The Panasonic 3DO Interactive Multiplayer has the highest nominal U.S. launch price in this comparison: $699.99 in 1993. The SNK Neo Geo AES followed at $649.99 in 1991. Those are original launch-price figures, not what the consoles cost today on the collector market. Because historical sources do not use one consistent rule for MSRP, retail price, and launch bundles, this is a comparison of some of the highest reported U.S. launch prices—not a verified ranking of every console ever released.
What was the most expensive game console at launch?
By nominal U.S. launch price, the 3DO leads this comparison, ahead of the Neo Geo AES. The ranking below sorts the reported prices as originally stated, without adjusting for inflation. It uses the configurations identified in the available historical comparison; in particular, the PlayStation 3 entry is the 60GB model, not a single price for every PS3 configuration.
| Rank | Console and launch configuration | Launch year | Reported U.S. launch price | Estimated price in June 2026 dollars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Panasonic 3DO Interactive Multiplayer | 1993 | $699.99 | About $1,618 |
| 2 | SNK Neo Geo AES | 1991 | $649.99 | About $1,594 |
| 3 | Sony PlayStation 3, 60GB | 2006 | $599.99 | About $994 |
| 4 | Atari 5200 | 1982 | $269.95 | About $934 |
| 5 | Mattel Intellivision | 1980 | $299 | About $1,212 |
| 6 | Atari 2600 | 1977 | $199 | About $1,097 |
| 7 | Sega Saturn | 1995 | $399 | About $874 |
The order is based only on nominal launch prices, so it does not match the inflation-adjusted column. The launch prices and June 2026 conversions are reported by Daily Rivet’s console price comparison. Its inflation conversions are estimates rounded to the nearest dollar, calculated using U.S. city-average CPI-U through June 2026; they are not prices set by the console makers. The ranking is limited to entries in that comparison and should not be read as an exhaustive all-time record.
How much did the Neo Geo and 3DO cost when they launched?
Panasonic 3DO: $699.99 in 1993
The reported U.S. launch price for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer was $699.99. Adjusted to June 2026 dollars using CPI-U, that is about $1,618. The 3DO is first here because its original-dollar price exceeds the Neo Geo AES figure in the same comparison.

SNK Neo Geo AES: $649.99 in 1991
The Neo Geo AES is listed at $649.99 in the U.S. in 1991, or about $1,594 in June 2026 dollars on the same CPI-U basis. Ars Technica’s 2020 historical analysis also singled out the Neo Geo and 3DO as consoles that launched above $500, while noting that inflation changes how those prices compare over time. Its inflation comparisons use a different reference date, so those adjusted amounts should not be substituted for the June 2026 estimates above.
Why the nominal ranking differs from the inflation-adjusted comparison
A dollar in 1977 did not buy what a dollar did in 2006 or 2026. Using the cited comparison’s June 2026 CPI-U estimates, the Intellivision’s $299 1980 launch price becomes about $1,212—more in present-day purchasing power than the 3DO’s $699.99 becomes, at about $1,618, only when comparing their adjusted amounts? Actually, the 3DO remains higher; the Intellivision instead exceeds the PS3’s adjusted estimate of about $994. This illustrates why the nominal list and the inflation figures answer different questions: one identifies the largest original price tag, while the other estimates how historical prices compare in current purchasing power.

The conversions are estimates, not a definitive measure of what a console “really cost.” They depend on the CPI series and reference month. Inflation Station describes its calculator as using BLS CPI data and identifies Video Game Sales Wiki as a source for most original console prices; it is a compilation rather than a manufacturer record. The June 2026 values here follow the cited comparison’s stated U.S. city-average CPI-U basis.
What makes historical console launch prices hard to compare?
- Different price definitions: Some records report a manufacturer’s announced MSRP; others report a retail or package price. The available historical entries do not establish one consistent definition for every console.
- Different configurations and bundles: A console’s launch lineup may include more than one model or package. The PS3’s $599.99 figure is specifically for the 60GB configuration, not every version.
- Different markets: Prices varied by country, currency, and included items. This comparison is U.S.-focused and does not mix overseas launch prices into the ranking.
- Nominal versus adjusted dollars: Inflation estimates require a stated CPI basis and end date. A conversion to 2020 dollars, for example, is not interchangeable with one to June 2026 dollars.
- Launch price versus resale price: Current collector listings reflect factors such as condition, completeness, and included games. They do not establish what a console cost at launch.
How to read this ranking
Use the nominal column to answer which console had the largest reported U.S. launch price in this group. Use the adjusted column for a rough purchasing-power comparison, keeping its June 2026 CPI-U reference month in mind. The source set supports these high-price examples, but it does not establish a fully verified roster of every console launch, so the list is deliberately narrower than an all-time definitive ranking.
