Tipping in Norway: When, Who, and How Much

Tipping in Norway is optional. Restaurant and bar tips are the clearest exception; there is no fixed amount, and cash is not necessary just to tip.

Tipping in Norway is optional and generally uncommon. The clearest occasion is a bar or restaurant, where you may leave a tip if you are especially pleased with the service or food. There is no fixed amount: Visit Norway says tips tend to be 5–15% of the bill, but that is a voluntary custom, not an expected charge.

When should I tip in Norway?

In most situations, you do not need to tip. Visit Norway describes tipping as uncommon overall, with bars and restaurants the main exception: locals may tip when they are happy with the service or food. Treat a tip as an optional way to show appreciation, not part of the price you are expected to pay.

How much should I tip in Norway?

There is no set percentage or required amount. Visit Norway says tips tend to stay within 5–15% of the bill; this describes a tendency, not a standard gratuity. Leaving no tip is acceptable. If you choose to leave one, make the amount one you are comfortable with rather than treating the range as a target.

Do I tip taxi drivers or hotel staff in Norway?

The official visitor guidance identifies bars and restaurants as the clearest tipping setting. Norway’s tax authority mentions service staff and taxi drivers when explaining how tips are taxed, but that does not establish that taxi tipping is customary. The official sources cited here do not set separate tipping rules or amounts for taxi drivers, hotel housekeeping, porters, or guides. You can leave a tip for exceptional service if you wish, but no role-specific amount is established.

Do I need cash to tip?

No. Visit Norway says cards are accepted almost everywhere and many businesses also accept phone payment; foreign currency is rarely accepted. You do not need to carry cash solely for tipping. If you decide to leave something, ask whether it can be added to the card or phone payment, or use Norwegian kroner if paying cash.

How are tips treated for tax and wages?

Tax treatment and wage rules address different questions. The Norwegian Tax Administration treats tips received by service staff and taxi drivers as taxable income treated as wages. Employers must report tips and handle withholding and employer contributions. The Tax Administration’s 2025 Skatte-ABC guidance explains those reporting duties.

Separately, the Labour Inspection Authority says tips are not part of wages under generally applicable wage regulations unless the employer reports them and includes them in the calculation basis for holiday pay, tax, and social benefits. That distinction does not make tips tax-free or mean they can replace an applicable minimum wage. For the current hospitality wage rules, see the Labour Inspection Authority’s minimum-wage guidance.
