A June 2, 2024, Reddit post associated with Keith Gill, known online as Roaring Kitty, appeared to show a large GameStop position: 5 million shares and 120,000 call options. Those figures came from a screenshot and contemporaneous reporting; the screenshot was not independently verified as a brokerage record.

What did the June 2 screenshot appear to show?

Forbes reported that the screenshot appeared to show 5 million GameStop shares and 120,000 call options. The reported options had a $20 strike price and a June 21, 2024, expiration date; Forbes said they had been bought for about $5.68 each. These are reported details of contracts shown in a historical screenshot, not current option terms or a trading recommendation. Forbes, June 3, 2024

The distinction between shares and calls matters. Shares represent ownership in the company. A call option gives its holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy shares at a specified strike price before or on its expiration, subject to the contract’s terms. The screenshot’s reported share count and option count describe different kinds of exposure and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What was verified—and what was not?

The screenshot’s contents were reported as apparent holdings, not confirmed account records. Forbes said it had not independently verified the image, and the Associated Press described it as an image that people speculated could represent Gill’s holdings. No independently verified, directly attributable explanation from Gill of the June 2 screenshot is established in the contemporaneous coverage cited here. Associated Press, June 3, 2024

How did GameStop stock move after the post?

GameStop shares rose sharply in the June 3, 2024, session. The Associated Press reported that the stock moved above $40 shortly after the open, with an earlier intraday gain reported as high as 75%, before closing at $28, up 21% for the day. These are historical figures for that trading session, not a description of the stock’s current price or performance. Associated Press, June 3, 2024

The move followed renewed attention to Gill’s online activity, but a price jump does not establish that a company’s underlying prospects changed. The AP noted that GameStop’s financial prospects had not changed over the preceding weekend and described meme-stock prices as capable of rising and falling quickly. Associated Press, May 14, 2024

What changed in the June 13 update?

Reuters reported on June 13 that a later post showed 9 million GameStop shares valued at $262.1 million. The earlier 120,000 calls were no longer shown. That later screenshot should be treated as a separate update, not combined with the June 2 image as though both were one verified account statement. Reuters, June 13, 2024

What else was happening at GameStop?

On June 7, GameStop filed a Form 8-K. Axios reported that the company disclosed a steep first-quarter sales drop and planned additional stock sales that day. Those company developments are separate from the social-media screenshots and do not confirm who held the shares or options shown in them. Axios, June 7, 2024

What a personal-finance reader should take away

  • The June 2 image appeared to show a substantial position, but the figures were not independently verified as brokerage records.
  • The reported 2024 call-option terms are historical; the contracts expired on June 21, 2024.
  • A dramatic one-day share move is not evidence by itself of a change in a company’s fundamentals, and meme-stock prices can be highly volatile.
  • A screenshot, online following, or market reaction is not a basis for assuming the same trade suits another investor.
