The precise cause was never publicly established: Couhig later said he was never told why the deal did not proceed. He eventually bought the club in May 2025 through Redwood Holdings.
Why did Rob Couhig’s first Reading takeover fall through?
On 18 September 2024, BBC Sport reported that Couhig’s attempt to buy Reading had fallen through after negotiations broke down. Reading said its exclusivity period with him had expired and that it would pursue alternative options. The club’s statement described the outcome and next steps, but did not establish a mutually agreed explanation for why the negotiations failed.
Speaking to BBC South Today in March 2025, Couhig said: “I was never told why my deal never went forward, someone started bad-mouthing me, that happens, but most recently there has been a pressure exerted saying that somehow I am an impediment to a sale.” He also described the process as “I have never seen or been involved in anything like this ever.” Those remarks are Couhig’s account, not independent confirmation of what happened in private negotiations.
What was happening during the 2024 sale process?
The attempt had appeared to be progressing for months. The Guardian later reported that Couhig reached a basic agreement on terms in June 2024 and that completion was expected by the end of July. The process continued beyond that expectation, with the exclusivity period ultimately expiring in September.

The Guardian reported that Couhig contributed at least £5 million toward Reading’s monthly bills and wages during the process. Reading said his loans had been repaid in full with accrued interest. The £5 million figure is the newspaper’s reported estimate, not an audited total established by the cited coverage.
What did Couhig say about his contact with Reading’s former owner?
In an interview with The Guardian in May 2025, Couhig said he had not spoken directly with Reading’s then-owner Yongge Dai and had limited contact with former chief executive Nigel Howe. His account was: “I never spoke to Mr Dai. I spoke to Nigel twice in a year, maybe three times. I spoke to several sets of lawyers representing Mr Dai at various times.”

Yes. The September 2024 failure was not the end of the takeover effort. On 3 May 2025, BBC Sport reported that Reading had agreed a sale in principle to Couhig’s Redwood Holdings, subject to final legal formalities. The Guardian reported on 19 May that the purchase had completed the previous Wednesday.
