In a March 2017 interview, Richard Branson worried that Donald Trump’s presidency could make it harder for another business leader to follow him into the White House. Branson did not claim that future candidates had been deterred: he voiced a concern, then said he hoped entrepreneurial people—women and men—would still make good presidents.
What Branson said about business leaders and the presidency
Branson made the remarks in Seattle during an entrepreneurship forum in Pioneer Square, held around the start of Virgin Atlantic’s nonstop service between Seattle and London. GeekWire reported the interview on March 28, 2017. Its account quoted Branson as saying, “There is a danger that Trump will have blown it for any business person to ever follow into the White House.”
He immediately qualified the warning: “I hope not, because I think there are lots of extraordinarily good entrepreneurial types of business people out there, both male and female, who would make very good presidents.” The remarks describe Branson’s fear and hope, not evidence that Trump’s conduct changed any candidate’s decision to run.
Why Branson criticized Trump
Branson’s concern came amid disagreements with the new administration over several issues. The GeekWire report framed the interview against the March 2017 executive order Trump signed to begin reversing Obama-era climate policies. The following points are Branson’s views as reported, not an independent assessment of the policies or their effects.

Climate policy
Branson said he was saddened by what he viewed as an effort to set back global climate action. He also referred to “190 nations” pledging carbon neutrality by 2050. GeekWire did not cite a primary source for that figure, so it should be understood as Branson’s reported statement rather than independently verified data.
Immigration
The report says Branson criticized Trump’s immigration restrictions. It does not detail the policies or quantify their effects.
Rank #2
Health care
Branson criticized the administration’s campaign against the Affordable Care Act. He characterized it as an attempt to push the country backward rather than improve universal health care; that was his description of the administration’s approach, not a neutral policy finding.
What Branson urged entrepreneurs to do
Branson argued that people should work together and that entrepreneurs should act when they believe government is failing. As GeekWire quoted him: “When government is letting us down, entrepreneurs must step in and use their financial resources to fill in the gaps – and campaign for leaders with a real heart.”

The article captures Branson’s 2017 concern that Trump’s example might cast a shadow over business leaders considering presidential politics. It does not establish that businesspeople became less likely to run, identify a candidate who withdrew or stayed out because of Trump, or test Branson’s prediction. Its policy references likewise belong to the political context of March 2017, not a current account of Trump’s policies or status.
