Contemporaneous reporting said 27 of the affected roles were on the League of Legends team and five were in publishing. A later page reusing the headline does not establish a separate 2026 layoff.
What happened in Riot’s October 2024 layoffs?
Riot confirmed the October 15, 2024 reduction to Game Developer, which reported the total and team breakdown. Nintendo Life reported the same figures the following day, attributing the confirmation to a statement to Eurogamer.
| Detail | Reported information |
|---|---|
| Announcement | October 15, 2024 |
| Total roles affected | 32 employees |
| League of Legends | 27 active developers |
| Publishing | Five employees |
The cited coverage did not name every affected employee or provide a complete role-by-role, location or discipline breakdown. Game Developer’s report and Nintendo Life’s follow-up provide the reported details.
Why did Riot say it was changing the League team?
Riot co-founder Marc Merrill described the League cuts as a change in expertise and team structure intended to address current challenges and prepare the game for the long term. He said, “This isn’t about reducing headcount to save money,” and added, “We’re not slowing down work on the game you love. We’re investing heavily in solving today’s challenges faster while also building for the future.”

Merrill also said Riot had confidence in League leadership and expected the team eventually to become larger as the company developed the game’s next phase. That was management’s stated plan; the contemporaneous reports do not establish whether or when the team grew. Game Developer reported that affected staff would receive a minimum six-month severance package, an annual bonus, health coverage and job placement assistance; those are details attributed to the report, not independently verified individual packages.
How is this different from Riot’s January 2024 layoffs?
Riot announced two distinct workforce actions in 2024. The January restructuring was far larger and company-wide; the October announcement was a separate 32-person reduction concentrated in League development and publishing.
| Announcement | Scale | Scope and stated context |
|---|---|---|
| January 2024 | About 530 roles globally, around 11% of Riot’s workforce | Company-wide restructuring. CEO Dylan Jadeja said Riot had expanded quickly, made significant bets that were not paying off as expected, and needed sharper focus. |
| October 2024 | 32 employees: 27 League developers and five publishing staff | Focused on League and publishing. Merrill described the League changes as a shift in expertise and structure for the game’s future. |
In its January 2024 announcement, Riot said it remained committed to League of Legends PC, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, Wild Rift and research and development. Jadeja said, “Today, we’re a company without a sharp enough focus, and simply put, we have too many things underway.” The January figure should not be added to, or mistaken for, the October count without clearly distinguishing the two announcements.

No separate 2026 event is established by the cited coverage. The exact headline later appeared on a page dated May 21, 2026, but its date conflicts with the contemporaneous reports documenting the 32-person announcement in October 2024. Unless reliable reporting establishes another reduction, the 32-person figure refers to the October 2024 event.
