No. The report behind that headline describes Republicans asking federal officials to investigate attacks on Elon Musk, Tesla and DOGE—not proposing a law that makes disliking or criticizing Musk a crime.
What Republicans reportedly asked federal officials to do
On March 13, 2025, The Independent reported that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and other Republicans wrote to FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi seeking an investigation into attacks targeting Musk, Tesla and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The report described vandalism and arson involving Tesla vehicles and dealerships, amid protests against Musk and his work at DOGE. It said the letter called for “an investigation into the wave of organized attacks.”
That is a request for law-enforcement scrutiny of reported acts—not a proposal to criminalize an opinion. The report does not identify a bill or law making hatred, criticism or protest against Musk illegal. Read The Independent’s report.
Why the headline sounds broader than the reported action
The Independent’s headline used the phrase “make hating Elon Musk domestic terrorism.” That wording frames the political push rhetorically. In the article itself, the reported request concerned attacks and vandalism, not hatred as an emotion or criticism as speech. Yahoo News carried a report on the same episode with the same headline framing; it is coverage of the same account, not evidence of a separate law or proposal. Yahoo News’ March 13, 2025 report.

What Greene said about who was behind the attacks
As reported by The Independent, Greene asked in a public post: “Who is behind it? Who is funding it? Is there a link with Democrat-leaning NGOs [non-governmental organizations]?” The Independent said the letter provided no other evidence for the claimed NGO connection. That is the report’s assessment; the available account does not establish that such a link existed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is—and is not—established
- Reported: Greene and other Republicans sought a federal investigation into attacks targeting Musk, Tesla and DOGE.
- Not identified in the report: A bill or law criminalizing dislike, criticism or opposition to Musk.
- Not established by the available account: The original letter’s full contents, the legal status of any specific incident, or the current status or outcome of any investigation.
So the literal claim in the headline is not what the reported action says: the story concerns a request to investigate attacks, not an effort shown in the cited coverage to make hating Elon Musk a crime.
