The figure came from a reported notice to Xbox developers, not a public Microsoft price list, so it should not be treated as a verified current price in every country.
What price increase was reported?
On October 21, 2025, Game Developer reported that Microsoft was raising the XDK price from $1,500 to $2,000. It attributed the report to The Verge, which had reviewed a letter sent to Xbox developers. Windows Central published the same figures that day and likewise attributed them to The Verge.

Game Developer said the change appeared effective immediately. The reports do not establish a later public Microsoft price schedule, current pricing by territory, or whether the same price applies to every developer. Treat $2,000 as the reported October 2025 figure, not a confirmed present-day global price.
Why was Microsoft reportedly raising the price?
The developer notice, as quoted by Game Developer and Windows Central, said: “The adjustment reflects macroeconomic developments.” It also said: “We remain committed to providing high-quality tools and support for your development efforts.” These are statements reproduced from the reported notice; they were not presented as a separately published public Microsoft announcement.

What an Xbox XDK is—and how it differs from the GDK
The XDK is specialized hardware developers use to make and test games for Xbox consoles. It is not the same as Microsoft’s Game Development Kit (GDK), which is software: APIs, runtime, tools, and service libraries that bring Xbox capabilities into Windows games. Microsoft explains the GDK in its March 2026 Xbox development update.

Public access to the GDK is not a substitute for specialized console hardware, console certification access, or Xbox partner services. Microsoft says developers gain access to service-layer resources such as Partner Center, sandboxes, and Xbox services as they complete relevant onboarding steps. It describes onboarding as modular, allowing development work to proceed in parallel with establishing a publishing relationship; this does not establish that every developer can publish a console game without partner approval.

What developers should take from the report
- If the project targets Windows PC, start by checking Microsoft’s public GDK resources; console development has different hardware and access requirements.
- If the project targets Xbox consoles, confirm current XDK availability, price, territory, and partner requirements directly with Microsoft or through the developer relationship. The October 2025 reports do not answer those current, location-specific questions.
- Do not compare an XDK’s reported price with a retail Xbox console as though they were interchangeable products. A consumer console is not the specialized development hardware described in the reports.
Microsoft’s March 2026 onboarding update says developers can complete onboarding in about 30 minutes, compared with 30 days two years earlier, and claims a reduction of more than 90% in agreement-handling time. Those are Microsoft’s own figures about its onboarding process, not independent measurements and not evidence about XDK pricing.
