Simon Hallett’s documented wealth-building background is a long career in investment management, followed by substantial investment in Plymouth Argyle. But the specific claim that he is worth £66 million is not verified by the available sources: none provides that figure, a valuation date or a method for calculating it.
How did Simon Hallett make his money?
Hallett built his career in investment management. Harding Loevner’s Form ADV supplement, dated 27 March 2026, lists him as vice chairman and partner and traces his work through Buckmaster & Moore in London and financial firms in Hong Kong before he joined Harding Loevner in 1991. It records investment-management and chief investment officer roles at the firm. Harding Loevner Form ADV supplement
A Morningstar interview likewise describes Hallett’s research and portfolio-management work in Hong Kong before Harding Loevner, and identifies him as an Oxford graduate and CFA charterholder. Morningstar interview
This career history supports the conclusion that investment management was the foundation of his professional wealth. It does not reveal his personal salary, investment returns, assets, debts or other financial details, so it cannot establish his net worth.

How did Hallett become Plymouth Argyle’s owner?
Initial investment in 2016
Plymouth Argyle announced Hallett’s appointment as a director on 15 April 2016. The club described him as a Plymouth-born lifelong supporter and an investment-management executive who had invested a substantial sum for a significant minority stake. Plymouth Argyle’s 2016 announcement
Majority shareholding reported in 2019
On 27 November 2019, Argyle said Hallett had invested a further £1.5 million to purchase 1.5 million shares with a nominal value of £1 each. The club reported that this brought his holding to 17,220,768 shares, or 97.19% of the company. It also said he had initially acquired a nearly 30% stake in 2016 and that later share purchases helped fund the stadium repurchase and grandstand-related costs. The 97.19% figure is the club’s reported shareholding as of that 2019 statement; it should not be read as a verified current ownership percentage. A company’s shares may also not translate directly into an owner’s personal net worth: valuation, liabilities and other assets matter.
What has Hallett said about the investment?
In a club-published Q&A on 18 May 2016, Hallett wrote: “My job is to preserve my family wealth, not to grow it, so I’m not seeking investments that offer financial returns.” He also discussed his personal connection to Plymouth and the club. Plymouth Argyle Q&A, 18 May 2016

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Simon Hallett’s net worth really £66 million?
The £66 million estimate cannot be substantiated from the available sources. The club’s announcements, career material and regulatory disclosure cited here do not state that figure, identify who calculated it or give a date or methodology for it. There is therefore no reliable basis to present £66 million as an established net-worth figure.

Nor can the amount Hallett invested in Argyle or his reported shareholding be used to calculate his personal wealth. Net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities; the sources above do not provide the balance-sheet information needed to make that calculation. Similarly, an investment firm’s business or assets under management would not be the same thing as a partner’s personal wealth.
The defensible account is narrower: Hallett had a long investment-management career, made a substantial investment in Argyle, and the club reported him as holding 97.19% of its shares in November 2019. The £66 million figure remains an unattributed estimate rather than a verified fact.
