The right way to return a UPS package depends on whether it is a purchase you received, an incoming delivery that has not arrived, or a shipment you sent. For a purchase, follow the retailer’s return instructions. For an undelivered package, check its tracking page for available delivery changes. If you are the shipper, you may be able to request a UPS Delivery Intercept before delivery.
First, identify which kind of return you need

Return a purchase you have received
Start with the retailer, not a new shipping label of your own. The retailer determines whether the return is authorized, which label or service to use, and where or how to hand it off. UPS says the shipper may provide a return label or instructions for printing one; if no label is supplied, one must be created. Some return programs may permit a mobile barcode or have different packaging requirements, so follow the retailer’s instructions rather than assuming you need to print a label or use a box. Prepare the package as instructed
- Use the packaging the retailer specifies. If you reuse a box, remove old shipping labels.
- When a box is required, UPS advises using a sturdy box and sealing it with plastic or nylon tape at least two inches wide.
- Check the return instructions for an eligible drop-off location, pickup arrangements, and any identification you should bring.
Hand off the return and keep its tracking details
Drop it at the location named in the return instructions or arrange a pickup if that method is offered. UPS notes that pickup can involve an additional fee. Keep the tracking information and check the shipment status; handing off or requesting a return does not mean the parcel has already reached the retailer.
Change or return an incoming package before delivery
Track the package and look for the delivery-change options shown for that shipment. UPS’s US guidance directs recipients to select “Change My Delivery” or use UPS My Choice when an option is available. If the option you need does not appear, contact the sender. Shipment restrictions and package contents can affect the choices UPS displays, so a recipient cannot assume that every package can be refused or redirected. UPS delivery-change guidance

Request a shipper-initiated return with Delivery Intercept
If you sent the package and want it back, UPS Delivery Intercept may let you request a return to sender for an eligible shipment. UPS requires the request before delivery. Available options and fees depend on the shipment and the request; check the service details or the shipment’s options rather than assuming a particular intercept is available. UPS’s cited US page says return to sender is unavailable in Puerto Rico. UPS says the requester is charged only if the request is completed. UPS Delivery Intercept
What happens after a missed, refused, or unclaimed delivery?
Do not treat refusal as a guaranteed, immediate return. UPS says an undeliverable package may be returned after the final delivery attempt. For some shipments, UPS’s service terms say a package refused by the consignee or otherwise undeliverable may be held while UPS contacts the shipper for instructions, including whether to return it. Those terms also describe possible charges to the shipper for a return or other handling; they do not guarantee the same route for every package. Check tracking for the status of your shipment. Expect shipment-specific fees
There is no single universal return or refusal charge in the cited UPS consumer guidance. Costs may depend on the retailer’s policy and the particular shipment, and can include return shipping, pickup, packaging, or return-to-sender services. - Has delivery already happened? A retailer return, a recipient delivery change, and a shipper intercept are different processes.
- Who is allowed to initiate the request? Delivery Intercept is a shipper-facing option; an incoming recipient should check tracking and contact the sender if the requested change is absent.
- What label, packaging, handoff location, and pickup method does the retailer or shipment require?
- What charges may apply, and who will be billed?
- Does the tracking page show that UPS has actually accepted or completed the requested action?
The cited instructions are for UPS in the United States. Availability, fees, eligibility, and service terms may differ by country, retailer, and shipment type.
