For an everyday pack with laptop protection, start with the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L; for a compact, less expensive carry, compare the Osprey Daylite Plus. If you need more room for commuting, hiking, or travel, consider the 28–30L options below—but check fit and the exact laptop dimensions before buying. Prices in this US-focused guide were displayed on October 8, 2026, and can change.
How to choose a backpack that fits your budget and routine
Start with what you carry on a typical day, then account for the heaviest occasional use. A work-and-gym load with a laptop, lunch, notebooks, and spare clothes needs more usable space and better compartment access than a light day pack. A pack that works for commuting may also work for a day hike, but comfort, ventilation, and access can matter more on the trail.
- Capacity and shape: Compare volume and external dimensions, not liters alone. A compact 18–20L bag is easier to manage for light daily carry; 26–30L offers more room for extra layers, lunch, or travel items.
- Laptop protection: Treat “laptop compartment” as a feature label, not a size promise. Check the current product page for the maximum device size and whether the sleeve is padded or suspended above the bottom.
- Fit and comfort: Strap spacing, padding, back panel, torso length, load, and body shape affect comfort. Try the pack on with weight in it if possible; comfort is personal, not guaranteed by a product description.
- Organization and access: Decide whether you want a simple main cavity, separate laptop storage, quick-access pockets, or bottle pockets. More compartments can help keep work items separate, but may reduce flexibility for bulky gear.
- Weather and weight: Compare empty weight and weather protection only as needed. A durable water-repellent finish can help shed light moisture, but it does not make a backpack waterproof.
- Total cost: Check the current checkout price, selected color or size, shipping, return terms, and warranty before ordering. Catalog prices and stock can change.
REI’s travel-pack guide treats carry-on use, weather resistance, business travel, technology, budget, and trekking as distinct selection needs, rather than a single ranking for every traveler (REI’s 2026 travel backpack guide, updated August 3, 2026).
Backpacks under $150 to compare
The listed prices below are US retailer or brand-page displays checked October 8, 2026—not guaranteed checkout prices. “Under $150” excludes an item priced at exactly $150, so the Cotopaxi Allpa 26L is included only for readers whose ceiling means $150 or less.

Which option makes sense for your use?
Everyday carry and laptop use
The Patagonia Refugio is the clearest fit in this shortlist when a stated laptop limit matters: Patagonia specifies a padded sleeve for devices up to 15 inches, along with 26L capacity, bottle pockets, hydration access, and internal organization. Its listing also states that the pack uses 100% recycled polyester, has an exterior DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and is made in a Fair Trade Certified factory. Those are manufacturer claims and materials details, not independent evidence of long-term durability.
The Osprey Daylite Plus is a lower-priced, smaller alternative at 20L and $80 on REI’s listing. Its listing identifies a laptop compartment but does not establish a device-size limit in the cited details, so check fit before relying on it for a particular computer.
Rank #2
- 1680 D. Ballistic
- Laptop compartment fits up to a 15"
- Tablet Pocket
- Deluxe internal organizer
- Multiple pockets
More room for a commute, day hike, or gym gear
The REI Co-op Ruckpack 30 and The North Face Recon listings both give 30L capacity, with a laptop compartment indicated for each. The Ruckpack listing also identifies carry-on use. These larger choices can accommodate more than a compact daily pack, but check the selected variant’s fit and dimensions; a larger nominal capacity does not ensure a better fit or more comfortable carry.
The Fjällräven Skule 28 offers 28L capacity and a laptop compartment, while the Patagonia Refugio sits between the 20L and 28–30L choices at 26L. For any of these packs, confirm laptop dimensions rather than inferring fit from capacity or the generic compartment label.
Compact travel and carry-on use
The Cotopaxi Allpa 18L Daypack is the smallest listed option here at 18L, with a listed carry-on feature and laptop compartment. It may suit a light personal-item-style load, but the catalog feature does not guarantee acceptance as a personal item or carry-on on every airline. Check the carrier’s current size limits and the packed bag’s dimensions.

The 26L Allpa costs exactly $150 in Cotopaxi’s cited catalog, so it is not “under $150” at that displayed price. REI’s 2026 travel guide also lists the Allpa 35L at $230, outside this budget; a well-known travel-pack line should not be assumed to fit a price cap.

- Measure your laptop. Check its width, height, and thickness against the sleeve dimensions in the current maker listing; screen diagonal alone is not enough to establish fit.
- Check the exact variant. Prices and specifications can vary by color, size, or listing. This matters especially for the Ruckpack and Recon price ranges and for gendered variant names on the Recon listings.
- Assess fit with your real load. If possible, load the pack with your laptop and usual daily items, then check strap spacing, adjustment range, back contact, and whether weight feels stable.
- Check the return policy and warranty. Read the current retailer or manufacturer terms before purchase; they are not established by the product comparison above.
- Choose weather protection for your exposure. If you commute in heavy rain, look for a pack with clearly specified protection or plan a separate rain cover. DWR finishes alone are not waterproof construction.
REI’s catalog also lists alternatives such as the REI Co-op Ruckpack 18 ($39.83–$79.95), The North Face Borealis ($115), and Jester ($62.93–$90), plus the Patagonia Black Hole Pack 25L ($103.93–$155), for which only some displayed prices fall within the budget. Those are retailer catalog examples, not a guarantee that every version is in stock at the lowest price.
