Yes, a significant lithium resource exists in geothermal brines beneath the Salton Sea region—but the available U.S. Department of Energy assessment does not establish a newly discovered, commercially recoverable deposit worth $540 billion. Its figures describe estimated lithium resources with different levels of accessibility and future technology assumptions, not a guaranteed supply or a market valuation. The lithium is underground in hot brine, not in the surface lake.
Is there lithium beneath the Salton Sea?
Yes. Lithium is dissolved in salty geothermal brines beneath the Salton Sea area. Geothermal facilities circulate hot fluid or steam to generate electricity, and the brine may also be a source of lithium. The U.S. Geological Survey describes the broader connection between mineral resources and energy, while the DOE-funded Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory assessment specifically evaluates lithium resources in the Salton Sea region. USGS: Minerals and American Energy · DOE geothermal publications
This is not a lithium deposit in the lake water or a mine that has already begun supplying battery materials. The DOE said in its November 2023 fact sheet that lithium in the region’s geothermal brine was not then being recovered. Direct lithium extraction, or DLE, is the approach being developed to separate lithium from the brine alongside geothermal operations. DOE’s November 2023 fact sheet
How much lithium is under the Salton Sea?
The DOE’s 2023 summary of the LBNL assessment lists three resource categories. They are not interchangeable: the larger figures incorporate greater accessibility or future technology advances, and none by itself means that the lithium is already being produced or is economically recoverable.
#1 Best Overall
- Energizer Double A Lithium batteries are the world's longest lasting AA batteries.
- These AA Energizer batteries power your most critical devices, great for smart home devices, outdoor surveillance systems, digital cameras, Blink outdoor cameras, and handheld games
- An Ultimate Lithium battery can hold power up to 25 years in storage for trustworthy backup energy, so you are always prepared
- Energizer lithium AA batteries are made with leak-proof construction to help protect devices (based on standard use)
- AA lithium batteries can perform in extreme temperatures from -40F to 140°F for year-round, indoor and outdoor use
| DOE category (2023) | Estimated lithium | What the category means |
|---|---|---|
| Proven | 760 kilotons | The assessment’s proven resource category; not the same as proven commercial reserves or current production. |
| Accessible | 2,600 kilotons | A broader accessible-resource estimate, not a guarantee that all of it can be recovered economically. |
| Probable | 3,400 kilotons | A probable future resource estimate that assumes technology advances. |
These figures are quantities of lithium in an assessed subsurface resource. They should not be confused with annual brine throughput, the amount a facility can extract each year, or the value of a saleable lithium product. The DOE’s fact sheet summarizes the categories and their assumptions. DOE fact sheet
Is the $540 billion Salton Sea lithium claim true?
The $540 billion valuation is not substantiated by the cited official sources. The DOE and Berkeley Lab report resource estimates and potential scale, but the sources do not provide that dollar figure or establish a calculation behind it. Without transparent assumptions for recoverable grade, extraction efficiency, costs, product form and lithium price, a resource tonnage cannot be converted into a reliable project value.

- 8 pack of Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA Batteries
- Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries are the world's longest lasting AA batteries
- Performs in extreme temperatures from -40 degrees F to 140 degrees F to ensure reliable use in all seasons
- These double A batteries are leak proof batteries, guaranteed based on standard use
- Lightweight household batteries last up to 25 years in storage
Calling the resource a “discovery” can also mislead. The 2023 assessment quantified and characterized a known geothermal resource; it did not announce that a commercially proven lithium mine had been found and valued at $540 billion. Berkeley Lab lead author Patrick Dobson described the finding as “significant potential as a domestic source of lithium”—the word “potential” matters. Berkeley Lab, December 12, 2023
What do the capacity and battery comparisons actually mean?
The DOE’s 2023 fact sheet puts the figures in context, but they describe different things:

This function supports stable operation in cold-weather conditions for RV setups, 12V vehicle auxiliary power, marine applications, and off-grid systems operating in low temperatures.
- 400 MW: the geothermal capacity installed in the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area in 2023.
- 21,500 tons per year: DOE’s estimate of lithium in brine associated with that existing capacity. The fact sheet said the lithium was not then being recovered; this is not an annual production figure.
- Up to 2,950 MW: the region’s potential geothermal capacity, not an amount of capacity already built or a lithium output forecast.
- More than 375 million EV batteries: DOE’s illustrative comparison for the scale of the resource estimate, not a promise that this many batteries will be made from future Salton Sea production.
Keeping these measures separate avoids a common error: a large in-place resource or battery-equivalent comparison does not show how much lithium can be produced, when it can be produced, or whether production will be profitable. DOE fact sheet
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could geothermal plants extract the lithium?
That is the proposed opportunity. Geothermal plants already bring hot brine to the surface to generate power; DLE is intended to separate lithium from the fluid before it is handled or reinjected. Co-producing lithium and geothermal electricity could use one resource for both energy and a battery material, but a resource assessment is only one step toward commercial production. The DOE fact sheet described lithium recovery as not yet occurring at the region’s existing capacity in 2023.

DOE also stated that DLE requires 99% less water per ton of lithium than current lithium-mining processes and emits almost no carbon dioxide. That is a generalized DOE comparison, not a project-specific lifecycle finding for a Salton Sea facility. Actual water sources, permitting and environmental impacts depend on the site and project. DOE fact sheet
What the estimate does—and does not—tell investors
For personal-finance readers, the distinction is between an estimated resource and a producing asset. The assessment supports the view that the region could become an important domestic lithium source. It does not establish a mine’s revenue, a company’s future earnings, a project’s costs, or a lithium investment’s likely return.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Resource is not reserve: the 760-, 2,600- and 3,400-kiloton categories are resource estimates, not proof of economically recoverable reserves.
- Potential is not output: the 21,500-ton annual estimate refers to lithium in brine at existing geothermal capacity, which DOE said was not then being recovered.
- Scale is not valuation: a battery-equivalent figure does not translate directly into a dollar value or company profit.
DOE’s November 2023 fact sheet and Berkeley Lab’s December 2023 announcement substantiate the resource’s potential, not the headline’s $540 billion price tag. Neither source establishes that valuation. DOE, November 28, 2023 · Berkeley Lab, December 12, 2023
