Potentially, according to a February 13, 2026, WIRED report: an employee with direct knowledge said workers at certain Social Security Administration (SSA) offices had been verbally told to give ICE the date and time of an upcoming in-person appointment if agents asked. WIRED did not publish an appointment-specific written directive or obtain a response from SSA or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
What WIRED reported about appointment information
WIRED quoted an employee who spoke anonymously, citing fear of retaliation: “If ICE comes in and asks if someone has an upcoming appointment, we will let them know the date and time.” The employee described the instruction as recently communicated verbally. The report does not establish that the instruction applied nationwide or that information was disclosed in any particular case.
Most SSA appointments are by phone, WIRED reported, but some are in person. The examples it gave include appointments requiring sign-language interpretation, changes to direct-deposit information, and in-person reviews of continued eligibility for noncitizens’ benefits. A noncitizen parent or other family member may also accompany a citizen child or dependent to an office visit.
What SSA’s published ICE letter says
In an August 27, 2025, letter responding to an ICE request for identity and location information about aliens in the United States, SSA Chief of Law and Policy/General Counsel Mark Steffensen wrote: “This letter recognizes that SSA will provide identity and location information for each alien upon ICE requests in accordance with section 1106(a) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. § 1306(a)) and 8 U.S.C. § 1360(b).”

The letter says ICE projected submissions concerning approximately 50,000 people per month. It describes requested identifiers and says SSA would provide matched identity and location information, which could include aliases, addresses, place of birth, banking data, phone numbers, email addresses, relatives, and IP addresses. That figure is a projected monthly volume in the letter, not a count of completed matches, appointments, or enforcement actions.
The letter’s described data fields do not list appointment dates or times. That distinction shows what the letter describes; it does not establish whether another process covers appointment inquiries.

How the published request procedures compare
SSA’s April 29, 2025, Program Operations Manual System (POMS) instructions say DHS requests should be forwarded to SSA’s Office of Privacy and Disclosure. They describe disclosure categories that include identifying or locating aliens, certain earnings information, and qualifying law-enforcement requests. Examples of information that may help DHS identify or locate someone include addresses, telephone numbers, banking information, email addresses, and IP addresses. For requests made to a teleservice center, the instructions specify a written request on official letterhead that identifies the subject as an alien.
SSA’s public privacy guidance says a law-enforcement request concerning a living person should be on the requesting agency’s letterhead, signed by a supervisory official, explain why the information is needed, identify the records requested, and include enough information to locate the person. It also says subpoenas generally must be signed by a federal district court judge and satisfy regulatory requirements.

| Question | Reported appointment instruction | Published SSA material |
|---|---|---|
| Source | WIRED’s February 13, 2026, account of one anonymous employee with direct knowledge | SSA’s August 27, 2025, letter, April 29, 2025, POMS instructions, and public privacy guidance |
| Information | Date and time of an upcoming in-person appointment | Identity and location information; the 2025 letter’s described fields do not list appointment schedules |
| Process | A verbal instruction to share details when ICE asks, as described by the employee | Published routing and request criteria for specified DHS and law-enforcement requests |
| What the sources establish | A reported practice at certain offices, not a publicly confirmed nationwide policy | The scope of the dated documents, not whether they authorize or prohibit the reported appointment-specific practice |
The comparison matters because a schedule detail and identity or location data are not the same information, and a reported verbal instruction is not the same kind of evidence as a published agency document. Neither the letter nor the standing request procedures conclusively settle how staff should handle the appointment inquiry described by WIRED.
What SSA appointment records and guidance add
SSA’s June 26, 2026, POMS entry describes iAppointments as a tool for scheduling telephone or in-office appointments. For certain iAppointments, the electronic appointment system (eLAS) suppresses confirmation notices to prevent unauthorized disclosure of personally identifiable information. This is evidence that SSA takes steps to protect some appointment-related information; it does not resolve whether or how staff may answer ICE inquiries.

What is not established
The public sources described here do not show a written appointment-specific directive, a direct public confirmation from SSA or DHS, or a clear account of the instruction’s present scope. WIRED said SSA and DHS did not respond to its requests for comment. The report does not say how often ICE made these requests, whether the verbal instruction was applied consistently, or what written legal review—if any—addressed it. Former SSA acting commissioner Leland Dudek called the reported directive “highly unusual,” but that characterization does not establish its legal status.
