A 74-year-old Hazelmere resident reportedly won $52,000 in TimesPool, according to a PerthNow report published on 20 November 2022. He told the newspaper he had played for nearly 40 years and had never won anything before. The story describes one person’s outcome, not evidence that repeated play improves the chance of winning.
What happened to the Hazelmere TimesPool winner?
PerthNow reported that the winner was a 74-year-old Hazelmere resident who chose to remain anonymous. He learned of the reported $52,000 win by phone on a Friday. “I just couldn’t believe it,” he told the newspaper. He also recalled: “I got a phone call and I didn’t know what to say.” PerthNow’s 20 November 2022 report is the source for these details.
How long had he played, and what did he plan to do with the money?
The article’s headline says “more than 30 years,” while its account says he had played for nearly 40 years. He told PerthNow it was the first time he had won anything. “I never thought I would actually win it, it was always just something to do for a bit of fun – it’s all I could afford really,” he said.
The report said he had recently undergone major surgery and hoped to put the winnings toward home renovations. “It will go a long way in helping fix up the house,” he said. The article does not specify the cost of the work or how much of the prize he would spend on it.

What did the 2022 article say about TimesPool?
PerthNow described the game’s entry and prize mechanics as they stood in its 2022 report. An entry involved selecting six letters in alphabetical order, along with a separate Super Seven Bonus letter. The article said people could enter using a coupon in The Sunday Times or online.
For the historical prize structure, the report gave a $4,000 starting jackpot that increased by $2,000 each week it went unwon. It also described an additional $50,000 for matching the six TimesPool letters and the Super Seven Bonus letter. Those figures and entry details are the newspaper’s account from November 2022, not verified current terms. The reviewed reporting does not establish present availability, entry costs, rules, or odds; check the official operator’s current terms before entering.

Does playing for decades make a win more likely?
No conclusion about improved chances follows from this story. The winner’s nearly 40 years of play and first reported win are an anecdote, not probability data. PerthNow also reported a Kalgoorlie woman’s $27,000 TimesPool win in May 2022 after more than 30 years of playing; that separate account likewise cannot show what a typical participant receives or whether persistence changes the odds. The Kalgoorlie report provides context, not a representative sample.
