What changed between the tentative agreement and the final vote?
The October 30 tentative agreement did not end the walkout: members stayed on strike while the agreement went through ratification, then rejected it on November 2. The union later reported the terms of the six-year agreement approved on November 17. The available announcements do not provide a complete, directly comparable account of every proposal, so the final agreement’s terms should not be treated as a description of the earlier tentative deal.
Terms the UAW reported for the ratified agreement
- An $8,500 signing bonus.
- A 20% wage increase over the contract, including a 10% increase in the first year.
- Restored cost-of-living adjustments and three 3% lump-sum payments.
- Enhanced retirement options and CIPP performance benefits.
- Healthcare remained unchanged for the agreement’s term.
These are terms as described by the UAW in its ratification announcement. UAW Vice President and Agricultural Implement Department Director Chuck Browning said the strike and members’ efforts produced what he called a “groundbreaking contract” and a more secure retirement.
