FedEx says it is keeping some McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighters in its fleet because retiring them sooner would leave more air-network capacity than it expects to need. The company moved its target for retiring the entire MD-11 fleet from the end of 2028 to the end of 2032, saying the later date better matches anticipated shipment volumes. It has not published aircraft-by-aircraft cost comparisons or said the MD-11 is cheaper than a particular replacement.
Why did FedEx extend the retirement date?
FedEx’s stated explanation is capacity planning. In its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K, the company said the extension would “better align the air network capacity of Federal Express to match anticipated shipment volumes.” That is the company’s rationale; its filing does not break down the decision by route, aircraft operating cost, or replacement economics. The schedule has changed before. FedEx said in 2023 that it would accelerate retirement of the entire MD-11 fleet to the end of 2028. In 2025 it moved the target to the end of 2032, and its 2026 filing repeated that plan. The target is a corporate plan, not a guarantee that every aircraft will remain in service until then.
What the revised schedule says—and doesn’t say
FedEx reported that it decided to permanently retire five MD-11s during fiscal 2026. That figure should not be confused with five aircraft necessarily being removed from active revenue service during that year: the same filing says eight of the ten aircraft permanently retired across all types in fiscal 2026 had already been temporarily idled and were not in revenue service.

FedEx’s fiscal 2025 filing also listed planned Boeing 777 freighter deliveries in calendar 2026 and 2027, alongside planned deliveries of other aircraft. Those deliveries demonstrate continued fleet renewal, but the filing does not pair a particular 777 with a particular MD-11 or route. How the 2025 grounding affected MD-11 operations
After the UPS MD-11 crash in Louisville in November 2025, the FAA grounded the type. The Associated Press reported that Boeing’s proposed fix included replacing a key spherical bearing and increasing inspections of parts attaching engines to wings. In May 2026, the FAA approved Boeing’s plan and FedEx resumed flying its MD-11s.

AP reported that FedEx said it worked with Boeing, the FAA, and its own experts to inspect and repair its aircraft, and that the government certified compliance with Boeing’s recommendations. How the decision fits FedEx’s broader fleet goals
Keeping MD-11s for longer does not mean FedEx has abandoned modernization. The company’s sustainability page sets a 2032 goal to retire all three-engine aircraft, a category that includes the MD-11, and describes aircraft modernization, operational optimization, and lower-carbon fuels as parts of its approach. FedEx says owned aircraft operations account for approximately 79% of its Scope 1 emissions footprint; that is the company’s reported share, not an MD-11-specific emissions figure. The public explanation supports a straightforward conclusion: FedEx believes its air network needs the capacity the MD-11 retirement schedule preserves, given its anticipated shipment volumes. Public filings cited here do not establish whether the decision turns on fuel use, maintenance, aircraft availability, staffing, or the timing of replacement deliveries. Without route-level or aircraft-level comparisons, claims that the MD-11 is cheaper or more efficient than a specific alternative would go beyond what FedEx has disclosed.
