Forbes attributed that amount to Donda’s House’s own account; it is not an audited total. Other public figures involve different donors, recipients, and types of support, so they do not establish a definitive ranking of Kanye West’s lifetime philanthropic spending.
Why there is no definitive cost ranking
“Most expensive” is difficult to establish because the public figures cover separate organizations and years. Some describe grants by West’s foundation, some are donations from other funders, and others are reported personal giving or a commitment. None of the cited reporting supplies a consolidated, audited account of total costs across West-associated efforts.

The figures below should therefore be read as individually reported amounts, not added together as a reliable philanthropic-spending total.

Donda’s House: reported $133,000 grant
Forbes reported that Donda’s House said it helped secure a $133,000 donation from the Louis Vuitton Foundation. This was a third-party foundation donation to Donda’s House, not a personal donation by West. The underlying grant record was not located in the reporting reviewed, so the amount remains an organization-reported figure rather than an independently confirmed or audited total. | Amount | What it refers to | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $18,080 annually in 2007, 2008, and 2009; $0 in 2011 | Grant activity by the Kanye West Foundation | Pitchfork reported these figures from the foundation’s tax filings. They describe grants, not all foundation spending; the 2011 figure followed Donda West’s death. Pitchfork’s reporting on the foundation |
| $70,000 total in 2016 and 2017 | AARP donations to Donda’s House | AARP confirmed the total to Pitchfork. This was AARP’s funding, not West’s donation. Pitchfork’s reporting on Donda’s House funding |
| $2 million | Reported giving to families affected by police violence in 2020 | ABC News reported the amount as a donation by West. Its report does not provide an itemized disbursement record establishing the recipients, timing, or completed payments. ABC News’ report on West’s 2020 giving |
ABC News also reported that West’s representative said he would pay for Gianna Floyd’s college education. That is a reported commitment; the cited report does not document a completed payment or its amount. ABC News’ report on the commitment
What the organizations did
Kanye West Foundation and Loop Dreams
The Kanye West Foundation was an earlier youth-focused effort. Pitchfork describes Loop Dreams as a high-school retention program within that foundation. It is important to distinguish it from Donda’s House: reporting identifies Donda’s House as a separate organization, not simply a renamed version of Loop Dreams. Pitchfork’s account of the foundation and Loop Dreams
Rank #2
Donda’s House, later Art of Culture
Forbes reported that West, Rhymefest, and Donnie Smith founded Donda’s House in December 2011 to honor Donda West. The organization said West designed its logo, paid legal costs associated with exemption status, and helped secure the Louis Vuitton Foundation donation. Those descriptions of West’s support are attributed to the organization as reported by Forbes, not to a published financial audit.
Donda’s House held concerts, classes, and events focused on arts and music education for local young people. In November 2016, it bought West’s childhood home with the stated goal of creating a community arts space. After a public disagreement about West’s role and the organization’s identity, it changed its name to Art of Culture in 2018. 2020 giving to families affected by police violence
The $2 million amount reported by ABC News is distinct from funding for Donda’s House or grants made by the Kanye West Foundation. Because the report does not give a full disbursement ledger, it should be described as reported giving rather than a verified accounting of completed payments to named recipients. ABC News’ report

West founded Donda Academy in fall 2020, according to the Los Angeles Times. But the reporting cited here does not establish its total cost or show that it should be classified as a philanthropic venture. The Los Angeles Times reported that California’s attorney general sent the school delinquency notices in November 2023 and September 2024 concerning required filings and possible loss of tax-exempt status. Those notices indicate regulatory and operational issues; they do not establish the school’s total spending or philanthropic character. Los Angeles Times’ reporting on Donda Academy

How to interpret the figures
- Identify the recipient: the Kanye West Foundation, Donda’s House, and families affected by police violence are distinct recipients or efforts.
- Identify the funder: AARP’s $70,000 total and the reported Louis Vuitton Foundation grant were not West’s personal donations.
- Distinguish grant activity from total spending: the foundation figures reported by Pitchfork describe grants, not every expense.
- Separate reported giving from documented disbursements: ABC News’ $2 million report and the college-education commitment do not include a complete public accounting.
- Do not combine unlike figures: the amounts span different years, donors, entities, and forms of support, and are not a consolidated financial statement.
