LVMH traces an early precursor to 2012, when Abloh began an artwork titled “PYREX VISION”; he founded Off-White in 2013. His 2018 appointment to lead Louis Vuitton menswear and LVMH’s 2021 majority-stake acquisition in Off-White LLC mark the brand’s rising cultural and institutional reach—not a disclosed measure of its sales or financial value.
Before Off-White: Pyrex Vision and early experiments
LVMH describes “PYREX VISION” as an artwork Abloh began in 2012. The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) characterizes Pyrex Vision as an early clothing project that used screen-printed sweatshirts and plaid shirts. It was a formative phase, but not the same thing as Off-White: Abloh later described Pyrex Vision as “sort of an early phase of making art.” In a 2019 Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago interview, he framed Off-White as the next step: “And with that, I started Off-White as this seasonal fashion sort of language concept, post this idea of streetwear, this idea of fashion looking for a change.”
How Off-White began in 2013
Abloh founded Off-White in 2013, with a studio in Milan, according to LVMH and the ICA. Rather than presenting it only as a clothing label, the brand’s biography describes a multi-platform creative endeavor. Its seasonal collections included clothing as well as objects, furniture, and publications. Off-White’s biography sets out that broader remit.
The label’s identity drew on familiar visual material: roads, signage, buildings, and uniforms. The ICA’s account of Abloh’s work connects those everyday references with questions of class, race, history, and gender. That combination helps explain the design approach: recognizable graphic cues could make fashion feel connected to the spaces and signs people encounter outside a runway, while also carrying cultural meaning.

How Off-White’s creative language expanded
Off-White’s development is best understood as a widening of Abloh’s creative practice, not as a simple sequence in which one project automatically caused the next. Pyrex Vision centered on altered clothing; Off-White established a seasonal fashion language and extended into other creative outputs; Abloh’s wider practice also encompassed music, art, furniture, and graphic design. The ICA’s Figures of Speech exhibition surveyed that range.
The exhibition was accompanied by a fully illustrated 512-page monograph produced in close collaboration with Abloh, according to the ICA. For readers who want a substantial record of the work across disciplines, the ICA’s exhibition page documents the book and the show.

Louis Vuitton and LVMH: major institutional milestones
2018: Louis Vuitton menswear
In 2018, Abloh became artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear, a role documented by the ICA. The appointment brought his work into one of the fashion industry’s most prominent institutions. It is a clear career milestone, though it should not be treated on its own as evidence of Off-White’s revenue or profitability.
July 2021: LVMH takes a majority stake
LVMH said it acquired a majority stake in Off-White LLC in July 2021. The company’s announcement establishes the ownership milestone, but does not state Off-White’s valuation, sales, or market share. It therefore supports a conclusion about institutional recognition and ownership—not a specific financial result.

What “success” means in Off-White’s story
The documented record supports describing Off-White’s success in terms of cultural reach and institutional milestones: the brand developed from Abloh’s earlier creative work, adopted a recognizable cross-disciplinary identity, and became part of a major luxury group’s portfolio. Abloh’s Louis Vuitton appointment likewise signals his standing in fashion. The available sources do not establish audited figures for Off-White revenue, valuation, or market share, so a precise financial assessment cannot be made from them.
